Welsh encouraged to help elderly beat winter blues

Published: 15th January 2021 13:56

A WELSH care provider is encouraging people from the country to make an extra effort with the elderly and vulnerable in their support bubbles at this time of year in order to help beat the winter blues (January 2021).

ISS Healthcare says a combination of dark evenings, dreary mornings and bad weather can leave many people, in particular the elderly and vulnerable, feeling quite down.

Caroline Jones, Regional Manager at ISS Healthcare, which has offices at Torfaen Business Centre, said: “We’re encouraging the wonderful people of Wales to make an extra effort to check up on the elderly and vulnerable in their support bubbles at this time of year as they can offer suffer from the winter blues.

Why not spare an afternoon calling an elderly relative, friend or neighbour and chat to them over a cuppa? It is more important than ever that we check on these individuals due to the current pandemic and the fact that we are all staying indoors more at the moment.

“Check if they need any groceries or toiletries. It might just be that they need a friendly face or someone to talk to. Please stick to current COVID restrictions and social distancing measures that are in place.

“Fatigue, general sadness, lack of interest and mood changes are all common signs that an elderly friend, relative or neighbour might be suffering from the winter blues. However, continuously feeling sad or down and the lack of sunlight at this time of year can lead many people to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is more severe, and we could recommend seeking medical advice.

“Our carers are always monitoring our service user’s moods throughout the year, but in particular, during winter and we do our best to make sure they have someone to talk to regularly and are helped up and out and about as much as possible.”

ISS Healthcare provides care support to thousands of people, with services commissioned through authorities in the area or purchased privately by individual service users or their families.
