Cascades Art Exhibition Pulls 200 Visitors To Preview in Portsmouth

Author: MattWingett Published: 25th October 2019 06:52

The Snow Witch Art Exhibition, involving the work of 40 artists from the Portsmouth area, attracted two hundred visitors at its opening night on Saturday 19th August at the former Thorntons Chocolate unit at Cascades Shopping Centre, Portsmouth.

Based on the local novel The Snow Witch by author Matt Wingett, the preview night had live music, theatrical performances, speeches and even included appearances from characters from the book. Donitza, the Snow Witch of the title was played by violinist Hana Maria, and Lissitch, an enigmatic shapeshifter, by actor Scott Jowett.

Blacksmith Lucille Scott, the show's organiser, said: "This has been a fantastic night. The sheer positive response of the public is just great. It's the first time Cascades have ever done an art exhibition, and it's really exciting to think of the possibilities from here." She added: "All the works of art are for sale - in fact some have already sold tonight, so if you are looking for a unique present, come quickly."

Works include forged steel sculptures, paintings, fabric, pottery, poetry and much more besides. The book's author, Matt Wingett said: "It's a really heartening and humbling thing to see so many people showing such an interest in high quality artwork that was created in Portsmouth. We are so lucky to have so many talented people in our town."

Copies of Matt's books are also available at the exhibition, which he will also be signing between 11am and 3pm over the coming weekends.

The exhibition opens its doors to the general public today, 21st October, and will be run for three weeks until 10th November, opening between 11am to 3pm.

There will be art workshops for children during the half term holidays. All visitors are welcome.
