A partnership between the University of Portsmouth Business School and the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is set to boost skills of senior managers, entrepreneurs and key decision-makers in small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region.
A series of short courses on professional development, finance, sales and marketing and strategic change have been designed by Portsmouth Business School following a survey conducted by the Chamber which indicated a strong requirement for accessible and flexible business education for SMEs in the region.
Dr Vijay Vyas, a Senior Lecturer in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, commented: "SMEs play a strong role in the UK economy but more often than not those employed within these organisations are not receiving the benefit of short courses which provide useful business skills as well as a Higher Education qualification."
The four modules being held in the Chamber offices in Havant, which each involve two-days training, are:
1. Professional practice for SME transformation (4 and 11 November, 2010) Without effective leadership, management lacks purpose and in today's complex global environment, organisations require good managers who are also effective leaders. This course addresses issues based on leadership principles.
2. Understanding SME finance (8 and 15 December, 2010) It is clear that in order to run a profitable business, finance needs to understood and this course is designed to provide a basic
understanding of financial principles.
3. Sales and marketing for SMEs (12 and 19 January, 2011) Successful sales and marketing functions are fundamental to the success of all businesses and this course will provide an understanding of the marketing and sales processes.
4. Strategic change for growth in SMEs (16 and 23 February, 2011) For personnel who need an understanding of various interacting components of the business environment influencing survival and growth of an SME.
Each two-day course is £400 for Chamber of Commerce members and £450 for non-members. To attend all four courses the cost is £1280 for Chamber of Commerce members and £1440 for non-members. Delegates can choose whether to attend the course(s) and gain a certificate of
attendance or to submit assignments which can then lead to the full Foundation Degree in Leadership & Management.
