Ladies looking for a new way to get themselves a little fitter for the New Year might be interested to know that belly dancing has all the factors required for improving fitness levels whilst engaging in a very sociable and entertaining activity.
Local teacher Susan RIchardson (aka Shunnareh) is offering a new course for complete beginners in Egyptian-style belly dancing at Crookhorn College of Technology, Waterlooville commencing Tuesday 10th January 2012, 7 - 8 p.m. Whilst the image of belly dancing to many people is scantily clad exotic dancers shimmying in smoke-filled clubs, in the Middle East oriental dance (or belly dance as is has become known in West) is a social dance, the basic movements are danced by both men and women at social occasions, in their everyday (or party) clothes. The two-piece costuming that have become iconic for belly dancers is actually a Western invention, latched onto by Egyptian film makers in the Golden Age of Egyptian cinema (circa 1940).
So, if you are intersted in some deep core muscle toning and strengthening, improving your upper body, and medium-paced cardio excercise whilst listening to great Arab music and wearing a jangling coin belt, why not try belly dancing? It's a lot less boring than the gym, not so exhausting as Zumba, and very sociable. And you don't have to bare your belly!! Laughter guaranted and you never quite know where it might lead.....
If you are interested and would like to know more contact Susan on 07814 656551, email her at shunnareh1@yahoo.co.uk or visit her website: www. shunnareh.webs.com. All her classes and more information about oriental dance can be found on the site. You've nothing to lose and a new skill to gain.
