Two special family events at Butser Ancient Farm mark the winter solstice this year on Friday 20th December.
Saturnalia, a Roman festive ceremony, takes place from 1.30 until 3pm. Set in our authentic Roman Villa children can take part in a ceremony to awaken the god Saturn, giving and receiving of gifts and learning what it would have been like for a Roman child living nearly 2000 years ago. They also get to make a natural decoration and receive a gift to take
home.
The Tales of Winter Magic takes place from 4pm until 5.30pm on the same day and is set in the Great Roundhouse. After making Winter Solstice head dresses, you have the chance to buy a hot drink and cosy up by the roaring fire to listen to tales by award winning Red Phoenix. Each child receives a gift to take home.
Tickets for these events cost £10 per child, with one accompanying adult attending free per child. Additional adults pay normal entrance price. It is advisable to book in advance, this can be done by calling 02392 598838.
