Residents Urged To Go Large With Veg As Food Festival Returns To Town

Author: annahowelll Published: 15th March 2012 13:43

The popular Petersfield Festival of Food & Drink will return to the town square and High Street in June, with organisers promising a "smorgasbord of culinary entertainment".

The 2012 event will take place on the weekend of June 23-24 - later than last year owing to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the town earlier that month.

This year Philippa Steward and Bill Oversby, partners in Greatham-based business SO Marketing will be aided by Petersfield-based photographer Chris Pearsall and his wife Karen and daughter Sarah, who were so swept up in the emotional success of last year's event, when more than 150 stalls thronged the town centre, that they wanted to contribute to the organising.

Steward explained: "We intend to keep the format much the same as last year with live music on Saturday night after the market traders leave the square and then have street kitchen demonstrations on stage on the Sunday.
"We have just started taking bookings and it is looking already like it will be even more popular with stallholders than last year. It will be a real smorgasbord of culinary entertainment, fun, competition, education and, of course, tasting..."

"It's also an ideal opportunity for local traders to engage with the whole town and its visitors, not just their normal clientele. And Petersfield, as a community, is very good at coming together and embracing events such as this."

The town's shops and eateries are being encouraged to participate in a food-themed window display competition in the week before the festival.

Each shop or restaurant will pay a nominal entry fee to take part with all monies raised being donated the Rosemary Foundation, a Petersfield-based ‘hospice at home' service covering the east Hampshire area.
There will be a children's treasure-hunt competition tied in with the window displays so the youngsters can have another chance to win a great prize.

And, as in 2011, the town's eating and drinking establishments will be celebrated at an awards ceremony, which will recognise excellence in various categories and whose winners will be decided by the people of Petersfield.

■ Stalls for the Petersfield Festival of Food & Drink start at just £50 (plus vat), and anybody wishing to book or learn more about the festival or the competitions, or wishing to sponsor any of the various elements, should call organisers Philippa Steward and Bill Oversby on 01420 538210.
