Look after your wellbeing this World Mental Health Day

Published: 7th October 2019 12:25

It's World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October, a day to show your support for people living with mental health problems and take action to look after your own mental wellbeing.

italk is hosting free Relaxation Skills classes across South East Hampshire teaching relaxation techniques to help you to stay well.

Why Relaxation Skills?

Just like the advice we get to look after our physical health, there are steps we can all take to look after our mental health. One of these is taking time to relax and enjoy the present moment. But when we're stressed or worried, that's sometimes easier said than done!

We all have our own ways of coping, like hobbies or supportive friends that help us de-stress when we have a lot on our mind. But according to the Mental Health Foundation, for about half of us, we cope by eating more unhealthy food, or just bigger portions and more snacks than we usually do. And about a third of us drink more alcohol when we're stressed.

If you've ever ditched the diet after a bad day, you'll know how this can help you feel better in the moment. That's because you're taking time for yourself, and that's vital for staying well.

But if you've noticed that it makes you feel worse later on - you're not alone. Evidence has found that how we feel can be affected by what we eat and drink, and it can become a vicious cycle where what we do to manage our stress or anxiety in the short term, could actually make it worse over the longer term.

And that's where our Relaxation Skills class could help.

We teach 3 simple, proactive relaxation skills that won't make you choose between your physical and mental wellbeing:

  • A breathing technique, to help you slow down and feel calmer
  • A muscle relaxation technique, to release tension
  • A visualisation technique, to free your mind from racing thoughts and worries
We'll also teach you a little about one of the psychological therapies we use at italk, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you understand how we get into these vicious cycles and, importantly, what we could do to get out of them.

And you'll find out more about our service. If you feel you could benefit from further support after this session, our facilitators will be available briefly at the end to answer questions, and we will be accepting self-referrals.
