Dickens 2012 is an international celebration of the life and work of Charles Dickens to mark the bicentenary of his birth, on 7 February 2012. The Centre for Studies in Literature at the University of Portsmouth is running a variety of events to stimulate discussions and spark debate about Dickens' writing and his influence on the wider world then and now. Hard Times: Child poverty in the Dickens bicentennial year
A public lecture by Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of the Child Poverty Action Group.

Charles Dickens brought child poverty alive in the 1800s through his books and readings. In his bicentennial year we reflect on the reality of child poverty in 2012 and the challenges of today. Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of the Child Poverty Action Group and leading national expert and campaigner delivers the Bill Sargent Trust Lecture.
This lecture is organised as part of the Portsmouth Festivities programme. Admission is free, but by ticket only through the Bill Sargent Trust http://www.bstrust.org.uk/
Afterlives: Mrs Dickens in Fact and Fiction
A public lecture and in conversation with Dr Lilian Nayder, author and academic
Thursday 6 July 2012, 7.00 pm refreshments, 7.30-9.30 pm, The Hub, Dennis Sciama Building
Biographer and academic, Dr Lillian Nayder, author of The Other Dickens: A Life of Catherine Hogarth (2011) will be giving a public lecture and following the lecture, will be ‘in conversation' with Orange and Booker Prize nominee Gaynor Arnold, author of Girl in a Blue Dress (2008), to debate the cultural afterlife of Mrs Charles Dickens in fact and fiction. The authors will be available to sign copies of their books during the drinks reception beforehand.

Thursday 10 May on Crime & Dickens & 21June on Dickens & Fallen Women, 8-10pm, Le Café Parisien. All are welcome and no booking is necessary.
The Centre for Studies in Literature at the University of Portsmouth is running this series of 'literary cafes' to stimulate discussions of Dickens writing and his influence in the wider world in the relaxed surrounding of a café.
