Author of brand new Portsmouth war book, which sheds light on the lives of residents during World War Two, is coming to give a talk at the Central Library.
James Daly, author of ‘Portsmouth's World War Two Heroes - Stories of fallen men and women' will be at the Central Library on Saturday 12 May between 1.30pm and 3pm talking about his new publication.
This insightful book documents the lives of some of the 2,549 Portsmouth service men and women that were sadly killed in their various wartime occupations. The previously untold tales include an account of a 16 year old paratrooper, a bomb disposal petty officer awarded the George Cross, and men killed in battleships, submarines, and tanks throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
James Daly, author and History graduate specialising in military, maritime and local history, said:
‘I was inspired to write the book by my grandfather who was an Arnhem veteran in World War Two, and my great-uncle who died after the troopship SS Laconia was torpedoed in the South Atlantic. He's buried in Kingston Cemetery in Fratton.
‘I've always taken a keen interest in military history, so after I had researched these rather personal stories, I became interested in the thousands of other people from Portsmouth who were killed in the Second World War.'
Although a lot of the material for his book came from official sources and national archives, James was fortunate enough to make contact with some of the families of the men and women who were killed. This gave his book the personal touch which makes it so special, and of such great interest to today's residents.
David Percival, library service learning and engagement manager, said:
‘We're delighted to welcome James Daly to the Central Library, for what we are sure will be a fascinating afternoon. There is a huge amount of interest in the city's local history, so this will be a great way for residents to discover Portsmouth's personal war stories. This author talk is part of packed programme of events to mark Adult Learners Week in our libraries.'
Tickets are free with a valid Portsmouth Library Service card and £2 for non-members. Please note that library membership is free, so this would be a great chance to join up when coming in for your ticket.
