Cold War Film Screening Onboard Historic Gosport Submarine

Published: 18th September 2013 16:31

Where better to watch a tense cold war submarine thriller?  Onboard a submarine naturally! Blockbuster cold war thriller Crimson Tide will be screened onboard HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport on Friday 27 September at 6pm & 8.30pm as part of Portsmouth's Making Waves Film Festival.

Bill Sainsbury, Event Manager at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said, "Film night was always a treat when serving onboard a submarine. It will be an authentic film screening in the Fore-ends of HMS Alliance, among the torpedoes"

Film goers, will be able to meet a submariner and walkthrough the historic submarine, which is the only surviving British ocean going WW2era submarine in the world, before the screening of the film. Places are limited as the submarine can only accommodate 16 people for a screening.

Classic Cold War blockbuster "Crimson Tide" (cert 15) starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington is set on a US nuclear submarine. A young first officer stages a mutiny to prevent his trigger happy captain from launching his missiles before confirming his orders to do so. This leads to a tense battle of wills.

The Making Waves Film Festival aims to take the film experience out of the cinema. From the 26 - 29 September, other Portsmouth landmarks such as Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Guildhall and even hairdressers will play host to a wide range of film events. The Film Festival will also showcase new local filmmakers and a selection of award winning international short films from the Caen project, Caen Vu Par and Ammore from the Lucania Film Festival in Italy. There are also film making workshops and innovative film installations at Tango Tea and The Kings Theatre.

Tickets for Crimson Tide onboard HMS Alliance are £20 per person and can be bought online at www.supportusalliance.co.uk or by calling 023 92545036. Places are limited, so advance booking is advised. For more information www.makingwavesfilmfestival.co.uk
