No.6 Cinema at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Presents Blancanieves, The Way Way Back, About Time and the New Programme
Published: 14th October 2013 16:47 |
Thursday's film BLANCANIEVES or Snow White as we know her, is a black and white, silent movie directed by Pablo Berger, and if you love Spanish culture it is a fiesta for the eyes.
Oscar winning script writers Rash and Flaxon (The Descendants) are back with Friday's film THE WAY, WAY BACK. With a complete lack of cynicism this is a good natured coming of age movie, which has some great comedic performances and lots of lol moments.
Spend a couple of hours dreaming and wallowing in the warm bath of a Richard Curtis film on Saturday night. ABOUT TIME is here to entertain you on an autumnal evening; showing some challenging films at No6, but sometimes it is nice just to kick back and enjoy.
The line-up for November and December is now finalised and you can check the schedule on the website. The printed programmes will be available towards the end of the week,
Blancanieves (12A) - Thursday 17 October at 19:00
Of the recent plethora of Snow White movies, Berger's silent, black-and-white take on the Grimms' tale is the perhaps darkest, but also the most imaginative. Snow White is now Carmen, born in 1920s Seville to a badly gored bullfighter whose wife dies in childbirth. Initially raised by her grandmother, she's eventually enslaved by her wicked stepmother, who now tends to her crippled father. But having inherited her father's skills, Carmen joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarfs leading to fame, if not fortune. Until, that is, her stepmother decides to deal decisively with this threat to her inheritance.
The Way Way Back (12A) - Friday 18 October at 19:00
Coming-of-age movies are very much the coming thing, but The Way Way Back particularly distinguishes itself in having top scriptwriters Faxon and Nash taking a turn at the helm. Shy adolescent Duncan is holidaying with his mum Pam. They are accompanied by Pam's boyfriend Trent and his daughter Steph - neither of whom Duncan really likes, and the feeling is mutual. But then he takes a job with oddball water park manager Owen, and along with his alcoholic neighbour Betty, Owen gradually gives Duncan the confidence and the smarts to come out of his shell and take on the obnoxious Trent.
About Time (12A) - Saturday 19 October at 19:00
This new film from Richard Curtis (Notting Hill, Love Actually) is that rare thing, a romantic sci-fi comedy. Tim learns from his father that the men of the family can travel through time, and although this doesn't extend to changing history, Tim determines to find a new girlfriend and make the world a better place. Neither ambition proves easy to accomplish, but after moving from Cornwall to train as a lawyer in London he eventually meets the gorgeous but diffident Mary. They fall in love, but a supernatural glitch means their initial encounter keeps repeating itself and goes no further.
