Danger on Film! Railway Safety Films, 1938-Today
Published: 30th October 2013 13:47 |
A public film screening by Mike Esbester, Lecturer in History
This free film screening will show a variety of evocative and sometimes controversial railway safety films, from 1938 to the present. Showing how to use the railways safely, they were the forerunner of modern public information films, such as the Think! road safety campaigns or the Green Cross Code campaign of the 1970s.
Using live action and animation, these powerful films show us the dangers found on the railways in the past and give hints and tips on how to avoid them. Introduced with a short talk by Mike Esbester, these innovative films capture an important part of the social history of Britain and of the railways, and tell us a lot about health and safety initiatives in 2013.
Films include: Enemy No 1 (1938), A Cautionary Tale (1944), and The Finishing Line (1977).
This screening is supported by the Centre for European and International Studies Research at the University of Portsmouth, and is based on Mike's research, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Date: Monday 18 November 2013 Time: 6.30pm Venue: Portland Building Room 1.53, University of Portsmouth Admission: Free (book tickets from https://dangeronfilm.eventbrite.co.uk/)
