A heart-warming new play, The Heroes Storybook, involving over 40 young people from across Hampshire is about to have its premiere performance on Saturday 7th Dec (2.30pm & 7.30pm) in the unique setting of Action Stations, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
Thanks to funding from the Ministry of Defence's Community Covenant Fund, over the last 6 months the Discarded Nut Theatre Company and The EDGE Project have been working with the EDGE Together Company, a group of young performers from armed forces families, young carers and local secondary schools on a unique drama and music project.
Through workshops based in Portsmouth, Bordon, Odiham, Aldershot and Middle Wallop, the Discarded Nut Theatre Company and The EDGE Project have explored with the company the idea of what qualities make a hero and looked at who our heroes are today, contemporary and historical, famous and private, factual and fictitious. Through their stories we have also explored issues such as conflict, loss, loyalty, courage and determination. The company have spoken with great honesty about who their personal heroes are, who in their life has inspired them and why they regard them to be heroic. These people have included parents, teachers, nurses, friends, soldiers, sailors, pilots; ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.
Artistic Director and writer of the play, Noël Jones, says: "These young people have laughed and cried together, made new friends, shared experiences, developed performance skills and, above all, showed their very own special kind of heroism. Their incredible openness and imaginations have inspired the story, words and music of The Heroes Storybook."
Alongside the production, the EDGE Together Company have been filmed speaking about who has inspired them, who their personal heroes are. Working with film producer Sophie Pyke, a Winchester University graduate, they have also interviewed family members, friends and volunteers who have connections with the armed forces to record their tales of heroism. The film will be presented to Hampshire Archives as a record of the project and a legacy to future generations about the extraordinary people who have inspired this generation. Extracts from the film will be shown prior to the start of the performance but in the meantime, you can view the trailer here.
