No6 Presents Child´s Pose, Parkland and Gone With The Wind

Published: 7th January 2014 11:54

This January No6 is screening a selection of films to help kick the winter blues.

Thursday's film CHILD´S POSE, Described by Peter Bradshaw as ´challenging, intelligent work´, is one of the cinema's more obscure but extremely worthwhile movies.

Friday´s film PARKLAND (the eponymous Parkland Memorial Hospital where JFK was taken post shooting) shows that rather than there being a network of plots there was a web of shame surrounding the event. Highly recommended is Paul Giamatti´s performance as Abraham Zapruder,

Saturday´s classic film GONE WITH THE WIND is all about storytelling: the handsome rogue, the beautiful spoilt woman, the triumph, the tragedy, our enormous screen, huge exteriors.....heaven. Note the earlier than usual start time of 18:00.

 Child´s Pose (15) - Thursday 9 January at 19:00

Cornelia is a haughty, privileged woman used to manipulating everyone to her own ends. Frustratingly however she can´t find a good woman for her grown-up son Barbu whose glamorous live-in girlfriend Carmen is the object of Cornelia´s secret jealousy. When Barbu kills a 14-year-old boy in his car Cornelia marshals all her skills to get the family to close ranks, bribe the police and prevent his imprisonment. In the process we discover the nastier implications of wealth and entitlement which extend far beyond the nouveau riche layer of Romanian society.

 Parkland (15) - Friday 10 January at 19:00

Parkland recounts the chaotic events that surrounded the shooting of President John F Kennedy in 1963. It weaves together the perspectives of a handful of ordinary individuals thrust into extraordinary circumstances. The young doctors and nurses at Parkland Hospital; Dallas´ Secret Service chief; an unwitting cameraman who captured what became the most watched and examined film in history; FBI agents who nearly had the gunman within their grasp; the brother of Lee Harvey Oswald left to deal with his shattered family; and JFK´s security team, witnesses to both the president´s death and Vice President Lyndon Johnson´s rise to power.

Gone With The Wind (PG) - Saturday 11 January at 18:00

A classic and epic historical romance set against the backdrop of the American Civil War the film boasts superb art direction, glorious music and lush camerawork including the legendary recreation of the burning of Atlanta. Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara is the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner who finds her passionate resolve tested by a fight for survival and her heady tempestuous romances with Rhett Butler and Ashley Wilkes. It remains the highest grossing film of all time and won a staggering ten Oscars including Best Supporting Actress for Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Academy Award.
