No.6 Cinema at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Presents The Nun, Short Term 12 and Hunger Games, Catching Fire

Thursday's film at No6 'THE NUN' has been described by one reviewer as '.... a bad week for wimples....Isabelle Huppert's sapphic sister, pale of face, crazed of gaze and horny as hell. She's chief predator in a roll call of superiors and full-out fruitcakes.' And that was just the Guardian review.
Friday's movie may seem a little tame after that, but 'SHORT TERM 12' has done remarkably well at the box office. The acting in this indie film is spot on and the characters are very touching.
And for Saturday night there is GAMES, CATCHING FIRE'. The second thrilling adaptation of the Hunger Games Trilogy returns to a dystopian future where to stay alive our heroine has to battle poisonous gas, raining blood and man eating monkeys, sounds like a bad day in "I'm a Celebrity".
The Nun (12A) - Thursday 16 January at 19:00
Pauline Etienne gives a remarkable performance as Suzanne in Nicloux's powerful adaptation of the celebrated 18th-century novel La Religieuse. Consigned against her wishes to the care of a kindly Mother Superior in an otherwise strict order Suzanne's misgivings about taking her vows are horribly confirmed when the Mother is replaced by the sadistic Sister Christine. Disbelieved about the cruelty she suffers Suzanne eventually ends up in a new order headed by an altogether friendlier character albeit with her own dubious agenda. With chilling echoes of THE MAGDALENE SISTERS and THE DEVILS this is a provocative and beautifully wrought work.
Short Term 12 (15) - Friday 17 January at 18:00
Drawing on his experiences in a rehab facility for troubled teenagers writer-director Cretton's drama centres on social workers Grace and Mason. Although barely older than their wards they strive to provide the tough love that will help them mend their lives. Grace hasn't told Mason that she's pregnant by him when into this uneasy but surprisingly positive environment comes Jayden, a self-harmer who's written a children's story clearly based on her own miserable life. Grace quickly recognises Jayden as a soulmate who might provide the key that will help her open up to Mason. This quietly persuasive film is admirably un-mawkish.
Hunger Games Catching Fire (12A) - Saturday 18 January at 19:00
The second part of Suzanne Collins' wildly successful sci-fi trilogy revisits Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, victors of the brutal 74th annual Hunger Games which President Snow's ruling elite use to keep the once-rebellious Districts distracted and terrified. Snow and his venal sidekick, Plutarch Heavensbee decree that the 75th Games will expose the young heroes to a potentially deadly fate but they are beginning to realise that mutiny is again fomenting in their homelands. The consequences for them, their families and friends are apocalyptic, allowing full rein to the imaginative talents of experienced fantasy director Lawrence and screenwriters Arndt and Beaufoy.
