University of Portsmouth Summer Events

Published: 25th April 2014 17:09

Please see below a list of events taking place at the University of Portsmouth this summer:

Janis Shute, Professor of Respiratory Pharmacology New Tricks for Old Drugs

Inaugural lecture by Janis Shute, Professor of Respiratory Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Portsmouth

Over the years, Jan has discovered that a number of drugs have potentially useful therapeutic effects beyond those for which they are routinely prescribed. Heparin is a good example. Discovered over 100 years ago and widely used as an anti-coagulant, it is now known to have multiple pharmacological properties that can be put to good use. The aim is to translate the laboratory findings for heparin, and other drugs, into new, safe, and effective therapies to treat respiratory diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

Date: Wednesday 14 May 2014

Time: 6-7pm, followed by a drinks reception

Venue: Richmond Building

Mike Stgroud From Ice to Dust

A public lecture by Dr Mike Stroud OBE, Senior Lecturer in Medicine & Nutrition and a Consultant Gastroenterologist, University of Southampton

He illustrates these ventures with stunning pictures from around the globe and incorporates both science of performance at extremes and humour since he has never been someone to take himself too seriously.

The Dark Side of Crime: Lifting the Veil on Fraud

An inaugural lecture by Mark Button, Professor of Criminology, University of Portsmouth

Fraud is the most ubiquitous and expensive crime. It is a crime that touches all parts of society, with tens of millions of people and organisations targeted and millions falling victim every year. The latest (and last) Government Annual Fraud Indicator placed a £52 billion price tag on the cost of fraud to the UK economy, over £10 billion more then we spend on Defence. This also represents at least 5 times more than the total value of all other crimes. Despite this, fraud receives very little interest and far too few resources from the state and civil society to adequately deal with it. Politicians only want to talk about benefits fraud, for the police it is a low priority with few resources dedicated to it and many fraudsters don't even get prosecuted. Even those who do, tend to get relatively light sentences. This lecture will seek to ‘lift the veil' on this ‘dark side of crime' by illustrating the huge extent of fraud and the limited interest and resources dedicated to dealing with it. The lecture will propose a philosophical tool to better consider fraud and throughout the lecture real cases of fraud will be used which will form 10 of the most notorious frauds perpetrated in recent times.

This event is part of Universities Week from 9-15 June, a national week which aims to increase public awareness of the wide and varied role of the UK's universities.

Date: Wednesday 11 June 2014

Time: 6-7pm, followed by a drinks reception
