Three Poet Laureates in Portsmouth

With the start of the Portsmouth Festivities 2014 fast approaching, there is still a chance to see one of the three Poet Laureates as part of this cultural celebration!
Carol Ann Duffy, the nation's Poet Laureate, will be joined by Portsmouth's Poet Laureate, Sam Cox, to give a talk, Q&A and book signing - and, of course, perform some of their acclaimed poems - at the David Russell Theatre on Friday 20th June at 2pm as one of the first events in the 2014 Festivities, running from 20th - 29th June 2014.
CAROL ANN DUFFY said she is "delighted to be visiting Portsmouth once again, a town I visit often with GCSE Poetry Live, and very much looking forward to being introduced to Portsmouth's Poet Laureate".
SAM COX, who has always admired Carol Ann's work, is looking forward to sharing one of her poems with the nation's top poet. She explains: "It is a real privilege to be welcoming the National Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy to Portsmouth. The chance to introduce her performance with a poem of my own shows that amazing things happen when we pick up our pens, express our hopes for the future and celebrate what we can inspire in one another".
Audiences will also have the opportunity to catch Duffy's predecessor when Poet Laureate, ANDREW MOTION, will perform on Wednesday 25th June 2014 at 8pm at the Kings Theatre, Albert Road, Portsmouth.
Earlier this year, the Kings Theatre and Portsmouth Festivities teamed up as Creative Partners, to help bring internationally renowned artists to the citywide annual festival programme.
Andrew Motion's The Customs House is a stunning new collection in three sections, and opens with a sequence of war poems, Laurels and Donkeys, which draws on soldiers' experiences from the First and Second World wars, through to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sir Andrew also reads from The Cinder Path (Faber), shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry, and answers questions about his writing and the role of Poet Laureate. Followed by book signing.
The second and third sections of The Customs House include a group of topographies, mapping moments in a marriage against the contingencies of place and family history; and several 'found poems', in which the poet collaborates with his source, mixing what is there already with what is about to be there: whether a remarkable sonnet sequence on the last days of the Baroque genius Francesco Borromini, or in other poems a richly imagined extrapolation from the silent premises of a painting.
