We're looking for inspirational volunteers willing to share their experiences of stigma and discrimination to take part in a Human Library training event on Saturday 16 August in Fareham.
The Human Library is an international equalities movement which started in Denmark in 2000. Today events take place in over 60 countries world wide to promote positive social change.
At a Human Library ‘Books' are people, and reading is a conversation. Events are completely free and great value.
Human Books are volunteers who share personal experience to challenge prejudice, stigma and discrimination. People like Susan who has experienced bipolar disorder, or like Peter who found himself homeless, or like Katrina, an immigrant working in the UK. There are other volunteer roles too. We're looking for people to act as 'librarians' and 'matchmakers' too.
In Portsmouth, a Human Library event was held in October 2011 as part of activities to mark World Mental Health day. This sparked off the interest which has led to this Hampshire wide project which began 18 months ago. We now have over 40 volunteers on our books, and this is our third training event.
Here's some feedback from previous training events:
"I enjoyed the opportunity to meet like minded individuals who were from many different and diverse backgrounds all with a personal story and journey to explore!"
"I was surprised at the diverse mix of subjects which could constitute being a book in a Human Library. As much as I am keen to be a book - I am also very interested in being a reader!"
"I gained a greater understanding of the concept of the Human Library and now have a good idea of how an event 'looks'. I could also see how the idea can develop into something dynamic with the use of some creativity."
