Peter Goodwin of Sea Phoenix the Martime and Museum Consultants will be hosting a discussion to mark International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
The Pirates of the Caribbean? The Men behind the Myth
Friday 19th September
2.00pm-3.00pm
Carnegie Library
Tickets are just £2.50 for this amazing talk.
This expert speaker will cover the origins and reality of pirate tradition, purpose, and organisation rather than the populist conventional ideology created by Hollywood film, TV and literature.
He will explore and define the differences between pirate, buccaneer, freebooter and those legally operating under a 'letter of marque' and will provide an insight into the various individual characters of the men historically classified as pirates and the global spheres in which they operated.
The presentation also explores the fact that although often considered notoriously vicious they did in fact work within the confines of protective liaison in what was termed the ‘pirate code'. Also highlighted is the fact that piracy equally involved adventurous women of the day.
This talk is not to be missed!
