Local knitters and embroidery enthusiasts are urged to get inspired by two significant Royal Navy anniversaries this year and get creative for a community art installation based on HMS Victory's foretopsail, the Trafalgar Sail.
2015 marks the 250th anniversary of HMS Victory's launch in 1765 and the 70th anniversary of Gosport-based submarine HMS Alliance launch. Both feature amongst the famous assets of the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
Knitters and sewing enthusiasts are being asked to create squares measuring 6 X 4 inches inspired by HMS Victory and HMS Alliance using a variety of techniques such as knitting, embroidery and crochet. The squares will then form a community Trafalgar sail art installation which will be on display in summer 2015.
Special workshops are being held at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on the following dates to learn new skills and see some of the objects that link to embroidery and other handicrafts from the collections. Sessions take place between 2pm - 4.30pm
- Monday 9th March
- Monday 20th April
- Monday 18th May
- And a public knit day on 13th June
Daniel Ball, Community Engagement Officer of the National Museum of the Royal Navy said: "The Community Trafalgar Sail project is a creative way for local people to be inspired by their local heritage and to celebrate two significant anniversaries of two very important vessels which call both Portsmouth and Gosport respectively their home. We are delighted to announce that Korbond has kindly donated a range of materials to the project for people attending the project's workshops to use and learn more about HMS Victory's and HMS Alliance's stories."
