Thanks to a £500 Love Your Street grant from Portsmouth Together, Love Baffins are organising a free, local community event to officially launch the Love Baffins Timebank - the Big Baffins Picnic will be on Sunday 30th August 11am-3pm on the top field at Baffins pond and includes bouncy castles, a variety of food, gift and craft stalls, face painting, treasure hunt, mobile library and much more! Bring a picnic, invite your friends and neighbours and bring some outdoor games (bats & balls, Frisbees, kites etc) to play! Come along, have some fun & find out all about the timebank!
Timebanking is really simple - it's a bit like a skills swap. For every hour you spend helping someone else, you ‘bank' a time credit that you can then use to receive help when you need it - and it can be anything: cooking, gardening, DIY, giving lifts to/from appointments, shopping, dog-walking, delivering leaflets, knitting, form-filling, painting, litter-picking, babysitting, car maintenance, computer support, helping at events - you name it! You can even learn something new or share a skill you have, like playing a musical instrument, speaking a new language, learning crochet or webdesign. Timebanking is different from traditional volunteering because every member's time and skills are valued equally and everyone has something they can offer. Time credits may also be exchanged for cinema or theatre tickets when available.
The Love Baffins Timebank is a brand new timebank open to anyone over the age of 18 who lives, works or studies in the Baffins area of Portsmouth. Children can get involved too, provided that their parent/guardian is already a member and gives permission for them to join.
Timebanking is a great way to meet new people, learn new things, share skills and bring communities closer together. It also looks great on your CV and can provide invaluable work experience when applying for jobs or changing careers. It's also a great way to get to know your neighbours especially if you're new to the area. It's free, flexible and lots of fun! No money ever changes hands. You decide when you are able to give help - you don't have to commit to a set number of hours each week or month. You can also easily fit timebanking around work, family and other commitments as hours can be exchanged at any time, including evenings and weekends. And you don't even have to earn any time credits before you can start receiving help - it's completely flexible and everyone who becomes a member automatically receives one hour's time credit, to get you started. If you end up earning more time credits than you can spend, you can donate them to another member or simply save them for a later date.
! Local organisations, charities and businesses can give and receive in the same way that individuals can. They can swap under-used resources, equipment, professional skills, spare tickets, training places, meeting room space and lots more!
If you'd like to become a member or find out more, please email Nicky Pybus, Love Baffins Timebank Coordinator, at info@lovebaffins.org.uk or call 07902078258. Love Baffis will then arrange a time and place that is convenient for you and talk to you about what you would like to give and receive from the timebank.
