A Taste of France in Gunwharf, Portsmouth

Author: Komal Helyer Published: 14th May 2015 12:10

Cafe Rouge Cafe Rouge, GunWharf Quays

Do you ever wonder where to eat when in Gunwharf, shopping or even before seeing a movie? We do. We like good food, and quite frankly there are not many choices that tick the boxes. (despite the wealth of restaurants there) .

AboutMyArea were delighted to be invited to take a look at the newly re-launched Café Rouge. And we are happy to report that it is a destination you must try out. With its interior redesign, a revamped menu and a new General Manager the restaurant is now definitely not to be missed.

As you enter, the design sings chic French bistro and with its beautiful views of the Quays, the ambience is delightful. The welcome from the staff was warm and friendly and we were seated in the booth next to the bar, a perfect hideaway if you are looking for a romantic meal, or a cosy corner for a catch up with old friends.

The menu has a variety of French classics and some interesting twists. We sampled the Rouge Olives, which were a gorgeous mix of olives, cornichons, caper berries and Roquito chillies. A perfect accompaniment with the Brut.

Ceviche SalmonCeviche de Saumon

For starters we had Ceviche de Saumon (not entirely French but sounded so good we had to order it) and Ragout D'escargots (otherwise known as snail pie!) The Ceviche was delicious, the salmon soft with a great hit of lime and chilli.

 Snail Pie Ragout D'escargots

The snail pie, was to die for! If you are a snail fan and presume they only come in garlic butter (as I did), you MUST try this.! Delicious oyster mushrooms and snails in a beautifully unctuous sauce topped with a light butter puff pastry. Needless to say the plates were licked clean.

Rib Eye Steak with Roasted Garlic BulbRib Eye with Roasted Garlic Bulb

We moved on to the main course where we had the superfood salad and the Rib Eye with frites. The steak was tender and cooked to perfection. The accompanying roasted garlic bulb was a hedonistic addition to the plump and tender meat. The superfood salad was most certainly full of healthy tasty morsels of butternut squash, sweet petite pois, artichokes and so much more, who says a salad must be boring?!

Chocolate Fondant                  Chocolate Fondant

However virtuosity didn't last long, when we moved swiftly on to the most decadent puddings on the menu, the fondant chocolate and the tarte tatin. Oozing warm chocolate sauce spreading from the middle of the cake, topped with chocolate and raspberry fondant ice cream. The fondant in my opinion was so scrumptious it didn't need the flavoured ice cream, good old vanilla would have been perfect. The Tarte Tatin was good, however the pastry could have been a little lighter, but pleasant none the less.

The new Café Rouge is perfecting its recipe for success, fresh ingredients, good cooking, great ambience and fantastic service. Give it a try, even if it's just for the snail pie! (Meal for 2, 3 courses with drinks around £60)
