Anna's Weekly Soap Update for Week Ending 17th Feb

Author: annahowelll Published: 18th February 2012 18:27
Another Big week this week in the land of Soaps, death, broken hearts and departures in the land of the Great British Soap Opera. If you have missed an episode or simply prefer my take on the whole thing (if it is the latter you might want to think about starting a campaign, if Sharon Marshal can write for EastEnders then so could I!) sit back and let me entertain you!

Emmerdale

So, the big story in Emmerdale this week focuses on the Barton's. After last week's realisation that he is still in love with his wife, John (James Thornton) thinks the best way to handle this is to push on with the divorce, pushing is feelings out. After one final unsuccessful attempt to change his mind, Moira (Natalie J Robb) gives in and agrees to the divorce. This frightens John into reconsidering, and before you know it they have kissed and made up and their kids have booked a hotel for the night for them (bit creepy - wouldn't dinner have done?) Excited to be finally getting her man back, Moira packs her bags, and the pair of them set off in Andy's (Kelvin Fletcher) truck. Whilst driving along the icy road the car takes a funny turn and ends up off road, hanging over a ravine edge. Both are still conscious, but John is trapped in the car. Declan (Jason Merelles) and Katie (Sammy Winward) just happen to be passing, and help Moira out of the edge-teetering vehicle, but the weight distribution sends the car plummeting (not good for any girls confidence). Paramedics manage to get John out alive, but when taken to hospital it is discovered that he is in a very bad way. They operate on him, and seem to have fixed the problem, and his family get to go in and talk to him, mainly about the farm, causing the poor bloke to keel over (well you would wouldn't you), though not before telling Moira he loves her. I would like to take a moment here to salute the writers of Emmerdale! No, not for killing off Pa Boerton (I'm not that insensitive, what do you take me for! Besides James Thornton is a sweetheart!) but for the fact that faced with her husband's death, which let's face it, is entirely her fault, Moira, rather than displaying the typical ‘Hollywood grief', where a single tear trickles down her cheek accompanied by a series of short sharp intakes of breath, literally whales like a banshee! It was really disturbing and made me feel very uncomfortable, whilst weeping, in the best possible way, fantastic acting and superb realism in her reaction to grief.

As news of John's death spreads through the village, everyone seems thoughtful in their own variations of grief. Chas (Lucy Pargeter) has taken the news quite badly, but in an admirable act of kindness goes to see Moira, and ends up being the only one who can comfort her.

Aaron (Danny Miller) won't leave Adam's (Adam Thomas) side, and is the only one the new head of the household can talk to, as he tries to stay strong for the rest of his family. In a deep heart to heart Adam confides in Aaron that he holds himself responsible, as he was the one who paid for the hotel. Aaron tells him he can relate, he still feels like that about Jackson - HANG ON, that was your fault! You phoned someone who you knew was driving, and who was upset enough to answer, so, actually, technically you were partly to blame for that incident as you enticed him to interact in a criminal offence, and a dangerous one at that. All Adam did was try and re-ignite the spark of passion between his parents, still criminal, but on a completely different level!

Andy reacts in the usual erratic way we have grown to expect, first of all he enquires after his car, quickly covering up his selfishness by saying that he was worried it was the cars fault that they crashed (should you be lending potential death trap vehicles out if you suspect they might break?). Then decides now is the perfect time to confess his undying, and not at all creepy, love for Debbie (Charlie Webb). She recoils in horror, and said she has no feelings for him whatsoever and that she only slept with him in order to get pregnant. He doesn't seem best pleased and confides in Dianne (Elizabeth Estensen), who goes round to have it out with Debbie (far too many family members getting involved in each other's sex lives this week, thank you Emmerdale!). Cameron (Dominic Power) assumes Dianne has been on Debbie's case at Andy's request and so storms round there to have it out again. Some mud is flung, and Andy, never one to stand for a bruised ego, takes great delight in telling Cameron how the baby was conceived - he just couldn't help himself, could he?

Declan, who I would like to remind you saved Moira's life despite being sworn enemies with John and Adam, tries to console Adam, for which he gets mud thrown at him (literally mud, from the ground, and everything). HANG ON Adam, he saved your mum, tried to save your dad, and is concerned for you, despite the fact that you slept with his wife, breaking his heart, not to mention his daughter's heart, sending Mia away to her death. Bit of perspective and gratitude would not have gone a miss. Especially seeing as Declan has just found out that only way he can go ahead with his music festival plans is to create an access road straight through the Barton's farm. If I was him, I wouldn't be treading on egg shells to broach that subject after that little performance, would you?

Coronation Street

Tommy (Chris Fountain) overhears a phone conversation between Kirsty (Natalie Gumede) and someone called Nathan, who she has previously lied about contacting, puts two and two together then runs to Tina (Michelle Keegan) to help him calculate. Between them they decide that the best form of action is to follow Kirsty when she goes out to meet Nathan (having lied to Tyron that she is working). Tommy follows her and watches them meet and decides that means she is cheating and Tyrone (Alan Halsall) should be informed.

Tyrone questions Kirsty, who is not impressed with the accusation, especially as Nathan is her cousin, and she had met with him to ask him if he would lend Tyrone his Ferrari as a valentine's gift. She promptly leaves, and Tyrone is left licking his wounds again. Tommy acts like nothing has happened, which is so rude considering that he literally separated his best friend from the woman who is carrying his baby. Anyway, Tyrone decides he hasn't given up on true love just yet, and turns up at the police station to propose to Kirsty. She, of course, accepts, and worse still, now thinks she has some sort of moral high ground. She pulls Tommy to one side and threatens him in her bunny boiling way and causes an argument between him and Tyrone, where his attempts to tell Tyrone about the threats fall on deaf ears and gets him thrown out of the house for being a liar (HELLO - she may not have been cheating, but she did do exactly this to Tina, can your memory and judgement be that cloudy Ty?). Tommy is forced to move into Jason's (Ryan Thomas) flat with the Weatherfield refugee's, Tina and Jason, but it does mean he gets to live with secret crush, Tina, again as well as making sure she doesn't get too close to newly single ex boyfriend, Jason. Still despite getting under the same roof as her again and joining her hate-Kirsty campaign, Tina seems oblivious to the crush Tommy has on her, even though it is as big as Kirsty's hair, but a little push from Stella (Michelle Collins) suggests he may start upping his game.

Elsewhere, Gayle (Helen Worth) and Audrey (Sue Nicholls) decide to stop drinking, but when neither makes it to 24 hours of sobriety, they replace the wagon with power walking shoes, which lead them to the nearest country pub on route. The same pub which happens to be the local of con man, Lewis (Nigel Havers). To refresh your memory, Lewis was the one who used to be a male escort, and charmed his way past Dreary, I mean Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) in order to rob Peter Barlow's (Chris Gasgoyne) bookies of £4000. Anyway, he tries to shrug them off by pretending to be his own twin brother, and then does a runner. He does turn up in Coronation Street later though, with a sorry note for Peter.

Julie (Katy Cavanagh) discovers she is pregnant, literally seconds after Brian (Peter Gunn) confides in Ken (William Roache) that he has had a vasectomy, so he naturally assumes either the test is wrong or she has been unfaithful and the baby is not his. She produces several positive tests, and he legs it! Julie manages to convince him to pay Dr Carter (Oliver Mellor) a visit where it is explained there is a small chance that the baby could be his if the vasectomy has failed. Julie doesn't seem to keen on being accused though, one thing worse than a woman scorned has got to be a pregnant woman scorned!

Katie (Georgia Foote) seems to have developed a new addiction, which is to leave her baby on his own while she runs errands. Despite nearly being caught EVERY time she has done it, she seems to thrive on the thrill - can't see this ending badly at all, can you?

EastEnders

Roxy (Rita Simons) starts the week pitying Jack (Scott Maslen) over losing the court case, and jack seems to be warming to the idea of her being around more, however it would seem that the Mitchell/Branning feud is bigger than their feelings, and with encouragement from both sides the ice reforms.
Andrew (Ricky Grover) plans a romantic evening for Heather (Cheryl Furgison), where he intends to give her an engagement ring, but when she doesn't turn up, having passed out drunk with Shirley (Linda Henry), he starts to show a very different side to his character. Heather discovers the ring and failed romantic gesture the next morning, and it would seem that she has noticed the controlling side to him too, as she deliberately publicly thanks him for the ring and the engagement before he has a chance to have a go at her. Later in the week, however, Shirley (who is lonely without Phil) tries Andrews patience again when she tries to get Heather to go to the cinema with her instead of spending time with him, but this time Andrew puts his foot down and tells Heather to tell Shirley no. Heather tries to tell Shirley that Andrew feels they aren't spending enough time together, and Shirley says she understands, however invites them over to dinner implying she thought Heather meant that all three of them weren't spending enough time together (which I personally don't believe) and the huge tug of love that proceeds (wouldn't like to be on the winning end of that wish bone, would you?) makes Heather storm out crying. Andrew runs to her rescue, and she seems happy again, for the minute.

Fatboy (Ricky Norwood) goes a bit over the top when it comes to Valentine's Day, showering Whitney (Shona McGarthy) with presents, on the hour, every hour, stifling her somewhat. In the midst of all this, Whitney finds time to sneak a snog with Tyler (Tony Discipline), witnessed unfortunately by Lucy (Hetti Bywater) who has set her sights on the swoony-Moon-ey, and so concocts a plan to sabotage everyone's happiness in revenge. At the R&R that night, which Fatboy is Jing at, Lucy discovers that Fatboy is going to present Whitney with tickets to Paris as her last gift, so decides to tell Tyler that he is actually going to propose, forcing Tyler to pull Whitney to one side to warn her and to declare his true feelings for her. When Fatboy announces the tickets over the mike, the relief is apparent in Whitney's eyes, and the pair make their plans for the next day's trip. With a rejected, deflated Tyler now easy pickings, Lucy goes straight to work on him, resulting in them ending up in a compromising position in the emporium.

Meanwhile, Whitney has told Fatboy she can no longer be with him as she doesn't love him, he is just her friend, and that she is madly in love with Tyler. She then goes to find Tyler, and you guessed it, walks in on the vulture that is Lucy Beale attacking her prey. She runs off in horror, while Tyler gets rid of Lucy and then proceeds to drown his sorrows in the Vic thinking he has blown his last chance with Whitney. Fatboy finds him and after some confusion, kind of gives Tyler his blessing to be with Whitney, upon which he goes excitedly round to Whitney to seal the deal.
