Anna's Weekly Soap Update for Week Ending 13th April

Author: annahowelll Published: 15th April 2012 19:08

Another Big week this week Walford, Weatherfield and Emmerdale - Murder, mystery and crime gallore in the land of the Great British Soap Opera. If you have missed an episode or simply prefer my take on the whole thing (if it is the latter you might want to think about starting a campaign, if Sharon Marshal can write for EastEnders then so could I!) sit back and let me entertain you!

For all the latest news on the soaps and all other things media, be sure to check out http://www.imediamonkey.com/ . You can also follow Anna on Twitter at @annahowelll .

Emmerdale

Ashley's (John Middleton) deep dark side rose closer to the surface this week.  Having got himself all paranoid about people gossiping about his care of Sandy (Freddie Jones), he lashes out at the poor old man again, grabbing the arm he bruised the week before, causing much pain and intimidation.  Realising he can't go on like this, mainly as he is worried about Jude (his boss, I think, not sure what happened to Bishop George) discovering he is leaving a dodgy vicar in charge of the village (although, it has to be said, you would already have to question how good a job the vicar in charge of a village which has had an attempted murder and an arson attack in the space of a month, was doing)  So, what is his answer, it's not to find god and be a good boy, no, he decides the best thing to do is to ship off his poor old dad to a care home, after tearing up the number of the adult services rep who visited so he can't alert the authorities.  Knowing that Sandy does not want to go into a home (although I bet he isn't as against the idea now as he was) he threatens him into telling Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) that it is what he wants, and Sandy complies.  A note of recognition needs to be acknowledged here for the superb acting of Freddie Jones, he was so convincing, I almost phoned adult services myself)

Zak (Steve Halliwell) collapses in the pub and is taken to hospital where he is told that he has suffered a panic attack.  Refusing counselling, he discharges himself and tells the family it was just indigestion.  He then proceeds to throw himself into work, causing even more suspicion amongst his nearest and dearest.

Gennie (Sian Reese-Williams) has a cold at work, which panics OCD Nikhil (Rik Makarem) into sending her home.  Unfortunately for the softest Dingle in the Village, she stupidly lets Charity (Emma Atkins) in on her plan to become sales manager, by trying to get new contracts for the business, and leaves the file out.  Scheming Charity gets a hold of the file in Gennie's absence and takes over, securing herself the contract and the job, much to Gennie's disappointment.

After last week's revelation that she cannot read, Ali (Kelli Hollis) ollis0 lets son Sean, who really is trying to be the new Aaron in my humble opinion, try to teach her to read.  Unfortunately, she doesn't pick it up quick enough to avoid nearly giving Jacob a biscuit in with nuts as she couldn't read the packet, luckily Alicia (Natalie Anderson) saved her son in the nick of time, but it was close there for a while.

Jimmy (Nick Miles) has agreed to go ahead with the vasectomy, but secretly makes an appointment to have some sperm frozen before hand at the advice of his brother, Carl (Tom Lister).  Carl thoroughly enjoys having this secret over Jimmy, who is lapping up the attention that Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) is showering him with, desperate that she doesn't find out.  Nicola books a weekend away for them as a special treat, but as they are leaving, Jimmy takes a phone call that leaves him very hot under the collar, but says nothing to his wife.  After the pair leave, Bob (Tony Audenshaw) receives a similarly disturbing call, who could it be from (and if you can't work that out, then I can't help you).

Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Cameron (Dominic Power) find themselves unsuccessfully hiding their feelings from each other this week.  After Chas goes out and brings a rich, good looking fella back to the pub, Cameron is visibly put out.  He quizzes her the next day, where she plays it up to be something it's not, but when the man comes back the next day to try and win her over and Charity lets it slip that she turned him down the night before; Cameron takes it that this means it was down to her feelings for him.  Following her down to the cellar she protests for a few moments before the pair start ripping each other's clothes off and totally do the dirty on poor Debbie (Charley Webb).  Chas meets him later in the week to tell him it can never happen again, but when Cameron later manipulates a situation which sees him and Chas alone watching Sarah in the pub, they are almost caught in the throes of passion by Cain (Jeff Hordley).  Again, Chas tells Cameron this must never happen again - OK Chas, we believe you!

Megan (Gaynor Faye) stirs even more trouble for Declan (Jason Merelles) and Katie (Sammy Winward) this week, when she deliberately disrupts Katie's business.  When Katie demands that Declan take her side, he sheepishly declines, forcing the two alpha females into a heated battle of words, where Megan vindictively tells Katie about Declan's finances, or lack of them to be more accurate!  Katie demands an explanation from Declan as to why he had kept the information from her.  She tells him that she doesn't care about the money, but she does care about Megan destroying their relationship, and demands he chose between them.  Declan makes the mistake of saying she is hysterical causing her to smash several things, including his beloved pin ball machine, before storming out and staying with Gennie.

Coronation Street

Stella (Michelle Collins) meets with her accountant to discuss what can be done about the mess Karl (John Michie) has left her in, and is determined she will never take him back.  However when he calls in at the pub with the money he made from selling his signed football shirt, she is taken back by the gesture.  Unfortunately, she doesn't show it at the time, and Karl goes round to Sunita's (Shobna Gulati) house where the pair end up sleeping with each other.  After the deed is done, Stella calls round to Sunita's to talk about what she should do, and Karl (who is hiding in the kitchen) hears it all and realises she wants him back.  He hop foots it out of Sunita's quicker than that and turns up t the pub to be taken back, leaving poor Sunita humiliated.  He and Stella decide to give it another go, as long as he gets his job back with Steve, hands over his cash cards and never steps behind the bar again.  He agrees to the new terms and conditions, but Stella soon picks up on the tension between him and Sunita, forcing him to ask Sunita, in private, to resign from her job to avoid being caught out.  Sunita tries to quit, but Stella pleads with her to stay, this isn't a recipe for disaster at all!

Peter (Chris Gasgoyne) listens to Carla (Alison King) and agrees for Leanne (Jane Danson) to have more access of Simon.  Unfortunately, when Simon hears Leanne refer to Carla as a black widow to Stella, he retracts the offer completely, telling Leanne she is no longer allowed to see the boy.  Leanne is heartbroken and confides in Ken (William Roache) her heartache.  Ken agrees with Leanne, and when he has Simon for the evening, phones Leanne so she can spend some time with him, as long as Peter never finds out.  All goes well, and Simon keeps the secret, but Ken soon see's the dangers of the game he is playing and tells Leanne that it cannot happen again.

Smitten Tommy (Chris Fountain) receives a phone call from his grandmother telling him that his late grandfather has left him a twelve thousand pound inheritance, and so he decides to use it to woo Tina (Michelle Keegan).  He plans a romantic evening where he tells her of his new money and suggests they spend the money going round the world.  Tina tells him that despite how generous his offer is, she thinks he should be putting the money to better use, as well as telling him how her and her dad were going to drive round the UK before he died.  He takes the hint and buys a clapped out old camper van, which Tina is chuffed to bits with (not as much as Kevin and Tyrone though, who spend the week cracking jokes about the heap).  Unfortunately, whilst setting off on their maiden voyage, the van gets as far as the Kabin, forcing them to rethink their plans.  Tina suggests putting it towards their future, what will they do with it?

David (Jack P Shepherd) gets a new job in a trendy salon, and proceeds to boast about how respected and well he is doing, unfortunately this is far from the truth as all he is allowed to do it sweep up and make the tea.  When Kylie (Paula Lane) turns up at the salon and realises the truth, she pretends to be an old client of David's and insist he do her hair.  The plan is going well, and the salon manager seems suitably impressed until the name on her cash card gives away her identity.  A showdown results in David being sacked on the spot, and the cunning Platt's come up with a new plan.  Tricking Maria (Samia Ghadie) into leaving Kylie alone in the Salon, the pair refuse to leave the salon and have the locks changed, the ‘Audrey's' sign taken down and an ‘under new management' sign put in the window.  Outraged, Audrey (Sue Nichols) tries to scrape off the sign, but when the police turn up she ends up being arrested for criminal damage and assaulting a police officer when she pushes him over in the struggle.  Declaring that this is war, and the end of her relationship with David, she is carted off to the police station.

EastEnders

Dot (June Brown) makes a public declaration that she was wrong to accuse Andrew (Ricky Grover) of Heathers murder and admits she was wrong.  Shirley (Linda Henry) is less than pleased with this development and bans both Andrew and Dot from Heathers funeral.

With George still residing at the Mitchells, Ben (Joshua Pascoe) and Jay (Jamie Borthwick) are finding it increasingly difficult to stay cool.  Phil (Steve McFadden) is forced to make a decision and goes behind Shirley's back and phones social services to have George removed from Shirley's care.  Shirley is furious, and Phil asks her what he can do to make it up to her, but is stunned when she says marry her.  Phil points out that it would be for all the wrong reasons, and for once Shirley seems to deflate a little bit, and no more is said on the matter.

With plans for the funeral underway, Phil agrees to foot the bill, whilst Shirley beats herself up for not knowing what song Heather would have wanted at the service.  Andrew tries to help by producing a CD, but Shirley stamps on it in the pub (yet still goes with his choice).

Janine (Charlie Brooks) tells Billy (Perry Fenwick) to clear out Heathers flat, which Shirley finds out about and goes over first instead.  Whilst there she realises that the steel picture frame she gave Heather for her wedding is missing, and puts two and two together and realises it is the murder weapon.  She informs the police and the search is on.  Meanwhile, the loaded landlady has had a pre-nup drawn for Michael (Steve John Shepherd), who umms and ahh's before a heart to heart with Jean makes him sign it.  Mind you, his new found friendship with jean seems a bit odd, especially when he plants the idea of investing her lottery win into the sport and leisure business, what could he be up to?

Lola (Danielle Harold) is chuffed with the nursery furniture that Billy ordered for her from Janine's credit card, which was delivered the night of the murder (that part is important, so remember it),

Ben has his interview with the CPS and blames his behaviour on his childhood as well as saying he thinks he was born evil.  For a moment or two, it looks like he may just spill the beans about the murder, but soon manages to compose himself.

The day of the funeral arrives (don't get me started on the size of the coffin, although I will just say this, the only way Heather would have fitted inside would have resulted in no open casket that's for sure!), and on Shirley's orders, everyone is wearing eighties gear in memory of heather (funny, as that's what they did at the Vic which Shirley branded as sick).  Before the ceremony, Billy hands Shirley a bag of Heathers things that he had collected from her locker at the club, which she keeps in her hands the whole day.  Ben and Jay read out the lyrics from a George Michael song, and Ben starts to crumble, saying sorry and how Heather didn't deserve to die.  Luckily for him, it just looks like he is really upset, so much so that Shirley cuddles him through the rest of the service. The police are sat at the back of the church, watching all in attendance, and when the party leaves and heads for the wake, they make a call for back up saying that ‘Mitchell' is there.  At the wake, Billy makes two identical toasts as he is drunk, and starts flashing around the cash that he has made from his and Alfie's (Shane Richie) dodgy alcohol deal.  The police swarm in and arrest him!

Meanwhile, Shirley has retired to the gardens and looks in the bag, discovering the train ticket proving Heather was indeed intending on eloping with Andrew (well, actually, all it proves really is that she had a ticket for a train, doesn't prove she was going to get on it, or that he didn't kill her, but let's not fixate on details).  Consumed with guilt she finds Andrew and apologises, saying she now knows it wasn't him (I would have thought the eye witness and the hoodie were better evidence than a train ticket, but I can't say I'm not pleased that Shirley doesn't think the same way as me).

The day after the funeral, everyone is wondering about Billy who has been kept overnight in police custody.  Shirley is adamant he didn't do it, and recruits Andrew as back up in her quest to find out who the real murderer is.  Mandy (Nicola Stapleton) makes a call, her and her ex, Alex (you remember that bloke who appeared in the shadows of the murder episode) saw Billy unloading boxes off a van (the nursery equipment, told you it was important, didn't I?) the night of Heathers death, but she is worried about going forward in case Ian discovers who she was with, so pleads with the mystery man to come forward instead, which he refuses to do.  Meanwhile, Billy has to admit to the police, who think the money he was flashing was Heathers lost wedding money, and the nursery furniture was bought with it (despite finding eight-hundred pounds on him out of a possible missing one thousand, meaning that posh kit cost only two hundred - not smart!) that he ordered the furniture on Janine's card without her consent.  They ask him if anyone else knew, to which he replied only Heather - what a mistaker-to-maker, they couldn't have proved that Bill and now you even have me thinking you did it, and I know who actually did!  His solicitor calls Phil and tells him to say he leant the money to Billy, which he does, so the dodgy alcohol deal doesn't get discovered, but it's still not looking good for Billy.  That is until Mandy's conscience gets the better of her and she tells the police that she saw him the night of the murder, despite them telling her they will have to check her story out with Ian.
