Radio Soop at Groundlings Theatre

Author: Katie Powell Published: 17th June 2011 22:48

Radio Soop is the latest original piece of work by Hampshire based professional theatre company, Soop. In this production the cast of five remain on stage for the entirety of the production (with one little exception) in a 1950's radio studio, were they ‘record' three broadcast plays.

The three plays and the action that happens between and during them is full of fun and comedy. As Director Nathan Chapman wrote in the programme, the effect being achieved was that even if the audience closed their eyes the show would work because the emphasis was on voice and not physicality. However, often the facial expressions of the actors brought extra comedy to the performance.

Another clever element of this production was the convergence of pre-recorded sound effects and sound effects improvised live on stage by voice and with a wide range of objects. This really was a performance all about the importance of sound to a production.

The small cast of five, Mark Wakeham, Alice Corrigan, Rachel Carter, Vincent Adams and Nathan Chapman all gave fantastic performances. Though for me personally, I felt that Rachel Carter gave an outstanding performance with a really incredible range of vocal skills.

My favourite part of this performance was the first radio play performed, Paul Chapel: Night Boat to Lundy. It had some truly laugh out loud moments. Although, it would only be fair to say that most of the audience were laughing loudly throughout the production.

All in all this was another excellent piece of work from Soop.
