The Zippos Circus At The Kings Theatre, Southsea

Author: annahowelll Published: 20th February 2013 12:46

Yesterday saw the famous Zippos Circus come to Southsea to fill this half term with fun and magical wonder.

When you hear the word circus, you automatically think of a cold outside smelly arena, making it not one of the most appealing things to do in this winter half term.

The Zippos Circus, however, takes all the fun and magic out of traditional circus, and brings it to the grand stage at the Kings Theatre Southsea.

A must-see for kids, and adults alike, this performance was tailored perfectly to suit, and amaze, every single member of its audience.

Comprising of several different acts, all with a magic or illusion style, every act entertained the crowd superbly.

First up was a Bulgarian couple, the "Stefanellis", who combined spectacular balancing acts, both on props, and in the air, with contemporary dance.  They began with a thoroughly spectacular James Bond theme, where they danced around a small bar which they used to lift themselves up in to some truly breath-taking gymnastic poses.

The couple returned for the second half, this time dressed as birds, and proceeded to perform a beautiful and extraordinary routine floating through the air with ribbons, at one point giving the appearance of flying out above the audience.

Next was a woman called Stephanie who, in the first half took to a rope hanging from the ceiling, twisting and turning with sheer brilliance.  She returned for the second half, dressed in an ultraviolet costume armed with so many hula-hoops I lost count and, in the dark lit up by her costume and props, put on a display that can only be described as mesmerising.

Throughout the entire show illusionist Guy Barrett along with his dancing entourage and female helper, Becky, presented some of the most amazing magic tricks and illusions I have ever seen.  Children and parents alike were left open mouthed watching him saw Becky in half, teleport into her and, in a trick that actually won the top award at last year's Magic Awards, spin a fan through her.  The tricks were so impressive I actually left believing in magic again!

The entire evening, which was well suited for children with start times, and interval times (the show began at 7 and had only a ten minute break at 8pm allowing for a 9pm finish) was hosted by David Hibling, with a lot of help from his clown sidekick, Tweedy (who incidentally was as talented trick wise as he was funny and entertaining) in what can only be described as a well organised, well thought out, spectacularly performed and brilliant production.

If you are looking for something different to do with the kids this half term, then I thoroughly recommend Zippos Circus.  Children of all ages will appreciate this (I took my 4 year old daughter who sat open-mouthed and clapping like there was no tomorrow from start to finish), as much as you will too.

Zippos Circus is running all this week - Wednesday 20th at 1700, Thursday 21st at 1400 & 1700, Friday 22nd at 1400 & 1900, Saturday at 1400 & 1900 and Sunday 25th at 1400 & 1900.
