Dreamboats And Petticoats - Review

The hit musical, Dreamboats and Petticoats, returned to the Kings Theatre, Southsea, last night for the next leg of its tour.
Those of you who have seen Dreamboats and Petticoats will know that it is the sort of feel good musical that you can see time and time again, which is why it tours so often, but which could make it hard for each cast to be part of as you would expect it to be near on impossible by now to stamp any sort of individuality on it.
However, the cast of this current tour have done precisely that!
Fear not, they have not tweaked with the enchanting story of the unlikely partnering of a grade A student and her rock and roll crush, nor have they changed the jam-packed score of songs which we all, by now, know and love and sing along wholeheartedly to.
What this touring production has added to this timeless show is something short of magic throughout the entire musical as the mesmerising live singing, dancing and playing of instruments by the cast took two separate time outs for all of the actors to sing in A cappella in such a hauntingly beautiful way you could have heard a penny drop whilst the packed out audience literally held their breath in wonder.
But it wasn't just the singing and dancing which impressed me; the cast managed to create their own special effects. In particular a scene which was played out in slow motion, with no trick of the light, or computer aids, left me speechless as the precise and effective acting used within pinpoint timing created something that a Hollywood blockbuster would have needed CGI to pull off!
Dreamboats and Petticoats is fast becoming one of this generation's all-time greats in the world of musicals, and should be seen by anyone who likes a nice fluffy show to warm the soul, and having seen it several times myself I can strongly recommend that if you haven't seen it yet, or indeed if you have, this particular tour is the one which will be used to compare all of its predecessors, and successors for years to come.
