David Walliams' Awful Auntie

Last night saw the first of five performances of the new touring production of David Walliams' best selling children's novel, Awful Auntie, at the Kings Theatre, Southsea.
This new production is brought to life by the same people behind the exceptional stage show of Gangster Grannie, and if you loved that one then you will love this one too.
Awful Auntie truly captures the heart of the story of young Stella fighting against her awful auntie for her life, and her home, helped by a giant owl and a friendly ghost, in such true Walliams style you can almost hear him narrating it.
One of the things that always impresses me when a book like this is brought to stage is how to make a change of scene happen as quickly and precisely as turning a page, but with the help of very clever revolving building props this was executed brilliantly, bringing each and every scene together flawlessly, with the help of clever lighting and special effects.
The one thing I will say, and not negatively but informatively, is to be careful about the age group of children you take to watch this show. Obviously, it is a children's story and so has a happy ending but, as some of Walliams previous work shares, this tale, as enchanting as it is, is a tad dark in places and may not be suitable for the younger audience member who may not have the attention to hold out for that happy ending.
All in all, this is a nice way to spend an evening with the kids to help cure the after-summer blues so book your tickets here to avoid disappointment.
Awful Auntie is playing at the Kings till Sunday September 16th.
