The Great Easter Escape From Portsmouth International Port

Published: 26th March 2015 13:05

More people will leave Portsmouth International Port on an Easter break this year compared to 2014, with a 4% increase in passengers heading to the continent.

The Easter getaway starts on Friday March 27th, with around twenty thousand passengers sailing to France, Spain and the Channel Islands during a busy ten-day period at the Port.

Brittany Ferries already has nearly 19,000 passengers booked on Easter crossings, an increase on last year's total of just over 18,000. Condor Ferries is also expecting to see busy services to Jersey and Guernsey during the Easter period.

The two days before the Easter weekend will be busiest with 2,500 passengers already booked to travel with Brittany Ferries on Wednesday April 1st, and over 3,000 passengers currently holding tickets for Thursday April 2nd.

Kalvin Baugh, Ferry Port Manager at Portsmouth International Port, said, "I'm delighted to see that even more passengers are discovering the hassle free holiday that starts at Portsmouth International Port. Children will be delighted to know that their parents can take what they want in their cars, with no strict baggage limits. That means all those Easter Eggs can easily be packed away ready for Easter Sunday, something that is quite a challenge for families travelling by air."

Anyone travelling to Northern Spain will be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Holy Week Festivals in Santander and Bilbao. They start on March 29th, coming to a close on April 6th. Known as ‘Semana Santa' in Spain, the week leading up to Easter Sunday sees religious processions, with local brotherhoods of hooded penitents marching through the city carrying effigies of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

Another spectacle for tourists leaving Portsmouth is the regatta at La Trinité-sur-Mer in Brittany. Easily reached on a crossing to St Malo, The ‘Spi Ouest France' event sees scores of single hull yachts racing off the coast between April 2nd and 6th. La Trinité-sur-Mer is a beautiful fishing port, with excellent restaurants and a beautiful beach to enjoy as well.

With more routes to choose from than any other UK Port, there's always something new to discover on a holiday from Portsmouth International Port. Art lovers will certainly be heading to Caen or Le Havre, with a new exhibition launching on March 27th at the Musée des Impressionnismes in Monet's hometown of Giverny. The exhibition focuses on the work of Degas, and his contribution to the impressionist movement. It features a remarkable collection of 60 paintings, drawings, pastels and sculptures.

April 3rd sees the first day of the Channel Islands' Heritage Festival. Passengers arriving from Portsmouth to Jersey and Guernsey will be swept up in a five week long celebration of the Islands' history. 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Channel Islands from Nazi occupation, with a number of special events being held. A visit to the Jersey War Tunnels is a fascinating insight into the occupation, and a recreation of life during the war will also be staged at St Peter Port's Castle Cornet.
