A management tool to assist personnel planners

A professorial inaugural lecture by Shabbar Jaffry, Professor of Economics, Portsmouth Business School.

One of the major concerns facing the modern Royal Navy is that of achieving the right personnel mix. Professor Shabbar Jaffry has examined historical trends and reasons for personnel's early exits, in order to provide support and insight into making a more accurate staff planning tool. In a wider Armed Forces context, Professor Jaffry has also developed a tri-service staffing model in conjunction with the Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA), to improve the analytical rigour of military personnel planning in the light of continuing defence budget cuts.

First Light: the cosmic microwave background

A professorial inaugural lecture by Rob Crittenden, Professor of Cosmology, University of Portsmouth

Light from the big bang still continues to shine on us in the form of cosmic microwave radiation.  This light has played a central role in helping us understand the nature and structure of the Universe: its age, geometry and what it is made of.  Essentially a 'baby picture' of the Universe, this radiation provides vital clues about how the big bang might have begun.  Professor Crittenden will discuss what we have learnt from this cosmic light since its discovery fifty years ago, and what secrets about our Universe it might yet reveal.

 From slug pellets to Fukushima

A professorial inaugural lecture by Graham Mills, Professor of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, University of Portsmouth

A wide range of chemicals, some of them harmful, can enter different water bodies (e.g. rivers, lakes, coastal and marine) from a variety of sources. The monitoring of these pollutants is now of global concern and legislation limiting the input of these substances exists in many countries, for example the European Union's Water Framework Directive and Marine Strategy Framework Directive. In this lecture Professor Graham Mills will describe how a number of novel water monitoring devices have been developed at Portsmouth. He will discuss various applications of these samplers for measuring both legacy and emerging environmental pollutants in the UK and worldwide. It will include the monitoring of pesticides, drugs and personal care products, explosives and radioactive elements.

The liminal space: understanding imprisonment and detention comparatively

A professorial inaugural lecture by Francis Pakes, Professor in Criminology, University of Portsmouth

Prisons are strange and often foul places. Re-offending rates are high. But does it have to be so?
