New 2013-2014 Portsmouth Property Association (PPA) Chairman Announced

Published: 3rd June 2013 12:26

New chairman Louisa Fairhall from Gosport pictured with her father, Graham An association which promotes the professional interests of more than 140 property-related firms in and around Portsmouth has a new chairman for 2013-14.

Louisa Fairhall is the third woman to hold the title at the Portsmouth Property Association (PPA) since inception in 1920.

She is also the first lady to follow in the footsteps of her father with the chain of office - in the past there have been eight father-sons.

Louisa, 49, operates family-run Fairhalls in Gosport, the town's oldest independent estate agency.

A respected surveyor, Louisa's father Graham, 76, was chairman in 1982.

He recalled, as a Gosport boy in the Second World War, being able to read books during black-outs from the light of the  intense fires caused during Germany's bombing raids on Portsmouth.

Louisa was handed the reins by Barry King, a chartered legal executive at regional law firm Glanvilles.

He himself made PPA history by being the first non-surveyor or estate agent to become chairman.

Louisa said: "I'm acutely aware of the sense of responsibility that comes with the title of PPA chairman and my key objective is ensure that the association continues to go from strength to strength and helps inform planning policy and legislation locally and nationally.

"As you may have read about, the PPA has been increasingly vociferous about issues that matter, including backing calls for the compulsory licensing of estate agents and taking the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to task over red tape.

"We are also deeply committed to backing British business excellence - of which there are so many inspirational examples here on our doorstep - as we collectively emerge from the longest economic downturn since the 1930s."

The PPA promotes and maintains the highest professional ethics and integrity amongst its 143 members in the property services industry.

The association has also raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity over the decades.

Louisa's nominated one is the Ocean Youth Trust South in Portsmouth, an adventure sail training charity which helps youngsters and companies team-build on 72-foot yacht John Laing.

Two months ago £1,500 was collected for Hounds For Heroes at the PPA's 93rd annual charity dinner, attended by 100 business professionals at The Royal Marines Museum in Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, plans are under way to repeat a keynote property convention hosted by the PPA, which counts towards continuing professional development (CPD) points.

Held at Langstone Technology Park, Havant, the one in March attracted nearly 100 professionals from the property industry.

Back in February, the PPA sponsored Team of the Year in The News' Business Excellence Awards 2013, with mystery shopping specialist Douglas Stafford Mystery Shopping taking the honours.

PPA was established in 1920, when King George V reigned, Lloyd George was Prime Minister and the body of The Unknown Warrior from the First World War arrived from France for symbolic burial in Westminster Abbey.
