Paul Touches Down At Tiger Tiger

Published: 17th July 2013 15:32

After taking time out to travel around the world, Paul Benge has resumed his career in hospitality by taking on the role of Assistant General Manager at Tiger Tiger Portsmouth in Gunwharf Quays.

Paul began his career in hospitality in 2002 working as a barman whilst studying a business degree at university in Chelmsford. Within three months, he was promoted to Assistant General Manager of ‘Toad' bar, owned by Eldridge Pope and after finishing his studies, spent the next five years working full-time in General and Holding Manager positions for properties across the South including Plymouth, Weymouth and Maidenhead.

Paul then took a job of Assistant Manager of ‘The Bar' in Chelmsford. ‘This was my first high-end venue with smart dress and slighty older, more sophisticated clientele' he recalls,

After 18 months, Paul was head-hunted by nightclub company Luminar for its complex in Basildon which housed its brands ‘Time', ‘Envy', ‘Jumpin' Jacks' and ‘Bonds'. In April 2009, after a £6 million refurbishment and its hugely successful opening, Paul was gaining his first experience of a multi-venue complex.

A year later, Paul decided to pursue his passion for travel. He spent three months in Thailand and Indonesia, nine more working in a bar in Melbourne, Australia and, after brief home visit, drove a motorbike across Vietnam followed by a return to Indonesia to qualify as a diving instructor.

In September 2011, Paul returned to the UK to take his first job with Novus Lesiure as a barman at Opal Bar in Embankment, London. Once the Area Manager learned of his background, he was interviewed and then offered a manager position at Tiger Tiger Haymarket.

After 18 months, Paul had one more stint in Indonesia, using his diving skills to explore unchartered sea beds for the Indonesian Government, did some travelling in Burma, and returned to the UK in March 2013. He then took some bar work until he was offered the position at Tiger Tiger Portsmouth.

‘Tiger Tiger Portsmouth ticked all my boxes in a venue,' explains Paul. ‘It's a large space in a great location and it has just had a major investment in its new Kanaloa and Jewel bars. I like working with large teams and a job where, due the variety of events and different nights, no two days or nights are the same.'
