Active Mentoring

Following the success of their pilot project, local social enterprise EBP South are delighted to announce that King Richard School have signed up for another year of the ‘Activate Mentoring' programme and are recruiting for business mentors from the local community. ESP South run a variety of programmes to bring business and education together.

In early 2014 EBP were commissioned by Portsmouth City Council to run a mentoring programme with King Richard School in Paulsgrove The programme was part of a wider volunteering initiative in the city called, ‘Portsmouth Together' that aims to find new and innovative ways to harness the power of volunteers to solve strategic city issues. Volunteer mentors were recruited from across the business community and mentored Year 11 students at King Richard School between September 2014 and May 2015.

Students at the school were selected because they had demonstrated a high level of potential but could benefit from the input of a mentor to help them achieve what they were capable of. Omar Namor, Director of Wildcat Marine says, ‘I was looking for an opportunity give something back to the community and knew I wanted to work with young people so this seemed like the ideal opportunity to do so.'

Cath Longhurst, CEO of EBP believes that volunteering is a rewarding experience for all those involved, ‘Our EBP firmly believes in the value of volunteering and its benefits for people from all areas of life. Last year, we recorded more than 53,000 volunteering hours from local businesses who have consistently told us that volunteering benefits not only the young people who come into contact with business people, but also the businesses themselves and their employees. Staff often return to work with renewed enthusiasm and a better understanding of their local community'.

Gareth Hughes, Head of King Richard School also believes that ‘Activate Mentoring' was a great opportunity for his students, "King Richard School was delighted to be part of the Portsmouth Together programme so that our students could benefit from the rich reserves of talent and experience that exist in the community. Furthermore I wanted our young people to see the rewards and benefits that can come from volunteering and so think about what they can do for their community in return".
