U-Need-Us to Close After 95 Years

Published: 10th February 2019 18:08

U Need Us in Commercial Road has announced that they are closing after 95 years in business.

The family firm made the sad announcement on their Facebook page today (10th February) saying that they will be closing in a few weeks' time and sale of all stock starts on the 11th February.

Last year the business put rumours to rest that they were closing and celebrated their 95th birthday with fun activities for kids and a visit from magician Roy Charles who was one of their oldest customers.

The Facebook post said, "It’s with great sadness to post that we will be closing down in a few weeks time.
I’m sure everyone is aware of the difficult issues facing retail, particularly in our high streets, and after nearly 96 years it’s time for us to call it a day.
The “Searle Family” are very proud to have played a part in the history of our wonderful city and also in the lives of the fantastic people of Portsmouth over such a long period of time. We have so many memories of smiles we’ve generated, the happy times we have played a part in creating and customers who’ve become friends, sadly things change and nothing lasts forever."

Portsmouth residents have shared their sadness at the news.

Cheryl McNiff who has lived in Portsmouth all her life and often took her son there, said, "This shop has been loved for generations. I've seen bouncers on the door at Halloween with big queues. It's always packed in there."

Kelly Turner from Cosham said, "I'm so sorry to hear this. It's always been my go to place when I'm having a party or going to a fancy dress event. I'm so angry that this keeps happening to some really brilliant shops."

You can follow their last days on the U-Need-Us Facebook page.
