Familie Histories On Film
In February 2012 a call was issued by artist/filmmaker and historian, Patti Gaal-Holmes, for anyone living or working in Portsmouth to submit old family films for ‘Portsmouth: Family Histories on Film'. A collection day - also advertised on BBC South - was held at Aspex Gallery (Gunwharf Quays) on Saturday 14th April. Over fifty films from the 1960s and 1970s were collected. These include footage of Old Portsmouth, the Round Tower, the Still & West pub, Southsea beach - including Alec Rose's 1966 ill-fated departure from Portsmouth to sail around the world; an Isle of Wight summer carnival parade with Ryde, Shanklin and Newport carnival queens; families picnicking and children playing; weddings and holidays abroad in places such as Egypt and Guernsey. Come and join us for a screening of a selection of the films on Tuesday 19th June at 6pm at the Portsmouth Film Society, Omega Centre, Somerstown. This will include an introductory talk by Patti Gaal-Holmes. Ticket : £2 and free for PFS full members
