G is for Goal Setting

Author: null null Published: 1st October 2012 11:13

Every ceiling, when reached, becomes a floor, upon which one walks as a matter of course and prescriptive right.
Aldous Huxley
Setting goals is an important way in which we can move forward in life, in business, in our relationships. It's a tool to help us with our sense of purpose and feelings of achievement.

Without clear goals, it's easy to drift along and become aimless and demotivated.

The activity of ‘goal setting' features strongly in many personal, team and business development programmes. It's a method used to work with people in many different settings, including therapy, and there are what can best be described as a commonly agreed ‘set of rules' for goal setting to work best.

These are known as the mnemomic S M A R T:

Specific - define goals clearly, don't be vague

Measurable - how will you know when the goal has been achieved?

Achievable - within your capabilities

Realistic - don't go wild, stretch yourself but be sensible about what's possible

Time bound - when do you expect to achieve your goal?

Some people like to add ER on the end of SMART. These are for Evaluate and Redefine, and it's certainly important to revisit your goals and adjust them if needed. When working to help other people, small goals which can be quickly achieved and generate positive feedback are of great benefit in building confidence and motivation. Setting unrealistic goals on the other hand can be very unhelpful.
