Portsmouth Student Union Receives Recognition for Services

Published: 27th July 2010 20:17

The University of Portsmouth Students' Union has become the first Students' Union on the south coast to receive national recognition for its work.

The Union received its award from the Students' Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI), a project supported by the Governments' Department of Business, Innovation and Skills. The accreditation is a two year self assessment model aimed to question the in depth workings of a Students' Union.  The Bronze award presented to the Union demonstrates that the Union is providing a number of key services to Portsmouth Students in a professional manner. Currently the Union provides sporting, volunteering and personal development opportunities to students along with offering a number of welfare and support provisions.

The current President of the Union Steve Topazio said; "This award is the result of a number of years hard work for everyone here at the Union. Everyone has put so much effort into not only making sure we get this award but making sure we provide the best possible service to our students. We have a great team here and I'm so proud of everyone who has been involved with the Union".

John Craven the University Vice-Chancellor said "I am delighted that the excellent work of our Students' Union has been recognised by this award.  The University is very pleased to work in partnership with the Union to improve the experience of students in Portsmouth."

So far, 66 students' unions across the country have embarked on this quality assessment model and until last week only 17 Unions had been accredited.

This awards comes at the end of successful year for the Students' Union in which it became the first in the country to register as a charity, received a number of grants for community work and received recognition for its website and its environmental credentials.
