Published: 10th July 2013 14:02

12 Girls from Portsmouth are taking part in the UK's 24 Hour ‘Relay For Life' to support Cancer Research in Portsmouth & Southampton in memory and support of loved ones.

The team ‘Luscious Lux' are made up of, Kathy Lucking, Susan Lucking, Lynne Harfield, Sarah Docherty, Anna Hall, Caroline Poole, Natalie Savage, Aimee Mcniven, Emma Manning, Hannah Godfrey, Michelle Herman and Karen Ward. The team have lost close family members or friends to the disease and have family members currently fighting their battle with cancer.

The 24 hour event takes place at The Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth THIS WEEKEND from 1200 Saturday 13 July to 1200 Sunday 14 July 2013.

‘Relay For Life' brings the community together to help beat cancer. Throughout the year, teams fundraise in their local communities to support the work of Cancer Research UK. Then everyone comes together in an inspiring overnight celebration and commemoration that the whole community can be part of.

At the event everybody gathers at The Mountbatten Centre track and take turns walking laps. Each team keeps at least one member on the track at all times for 24 hours.

Kathy Lucking, Luscious Lux Team Captain, says:

‘'Relay For Life is a remarkable event with the proceeds helping to save lives in our local area. Having lost a family member this year to the disease with another two members fighting, it is something my team mates and I feel very passionate about.

Last year the event raised £65,000 and the team have a personal target of £2,000. We hope to contribute to that by raising as much as we can in sponsorship to go towards helping to save the lives of our family and friends.''

Every Relay For Life 24 hours, runs overnight and includes a Survivors Lap of Honour, the Relay begins with the inspiring Survivors' Lap of Honour. Cancer survivors walk the first lap, cheered and supported by the community. Together everyone celebrates life and the efforts we are all making to help beat cancer. Then evening also includes a moving Candle of Hope ceremony to pay tribute to those whose lives have been affected by cancer. With the ceremony in their minds the teams return to the Relay.
