The Three Belles need your help with their brand spanking wartime show with a difference

Author: MattWingett Published: 14th May 2014 13:09

Vocal harmony trio The Three Belles who formed in Portsmouth are putting out an appeal for your help.

The popular trio are launching a new comedy revue called London Life, based on a little-known magazine from the 1930s and 1940s.

The normally reserved singers decided to put on the show after stumbling on a pile of London Life magazines in Langford's antiques shop, Albert Road.

"When we looked more closely at the magazines we realised London Life was a wartime magazine dedicated to people wearing rubber, cross-dressing, spanking and other fads.  After we'd picked up our jaws from the floor we saw just how funny the whole thing was. Whilst there was bombing and horror going on all around them, one dedicated underground group was publishing a magazine which was really about escaping from the awfulness around them. There's nothing rude - this is wartime Britain, after all, but it is very funny!" says Anneka Wass of The Three Belles.

The show uses real letters from the people who wrote to London Life to create a riotous musical comedy. "Their stories are often funny, poignant and sometimes moving. They never spoke about it in public, but these people decided to seek comfort in unconventional ways at a time when rubber, leather and clothing was strictly rationed."

The show includes the real letter from the woman who made herself a rubber dress from bath curtains only to nearly choke on rubber fumes after sitting in front of a fire, or the married couple who discovered a stiff-upper-lipped love of cross-dressing at a Christmas party.

"The setting to their lives was danger," says Sally Taylor, also of The Three Belles. "So in many ways the story is tragi-comic. What we find fascinating is that this story has never been told before."

The Three Belles will be weaving 1940s songs into the show such as Gimme Some Skin, Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar, and the earlier Masculine Women, Feminine Men.

The singers need to raise £10,000 to take the show to Edinburgh - and that's why they need your help.

"It's not a cheap business going to the Fringe," says third Belle Isabelle Moore. "We need your help, and have launched a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo that runs until May 24th. Remember, your Belles Need You!"

London Life, The True Story of the Secret Kinks of World War 2 will premiere in July in London before transferring to the Edinburgh Fringe on August 11th.
