Home-Start family support charity has been working with the council to recruit, train and support volunteers to deliver stay and play group sessions in the city's Family Hubs.
There are currently 15 volunteer led stay and play groups in Family Hubs across the city - at least one on every day of the week. The groups provide an opportunity for parents to get out into the community, meet other parents and for children to socialise and enjoy a range of play experiences. There are plans to expand the volunteer led groups in Family Hubs for parents of young people
Louise Boyle, Business Manager at Home-Start said: "Our volunteers play a vital part in providing this key service for families - they're responsible for the running of groups, including setting up and packing away and welcoming families. We currently have over 100 volunteers - 20 of which run the weekly stay and play groups in Family Hubs so parents attending will have a regular volunteer at their session to enable them to build ongoing relationships with local families."
Cllr Rob Wood, Cabinet Member for children's services and education said: "'This is great example of the important role that volunteers play in our community. Families really value the stay and play groups in Family Hubs and volunteers are ideally placed to offer this ongoing support and interaction."
