Snow White And The Magnificent Seven Real Dwarfs At The Kings

Author: annahowelll Published: 8th December 2017 10:39

This week saw the start of this year's panto season at the Kings Theatre, Southsea, with Snow White and the magnificent seven real dwarfs, and what a Christmas Cracker of a show it is!

It's hard not to connect the time old tradition of pantomime with the Kings, after all there isn't a more magical setting than this stunning Matcham theatre making the whole experience so much more than just a production year after year, adding to the King's solid and wide spread reputation, and gathering more momentum and applause every single Christmas.

In fact it is more than fair to say that the King's Theatre gets better and better each and every year, thanks to the tireless effort of its cast and production staff whose attention to detail is second to none!

Returning to the Kings for Snow White are Anita Harris, who takes on the role of Queen Malevola, Marcus Patrick as the huntsman, who join Melinda Messenger, as Fairy Sparkles, and the Portsmouth Players very own Jack Edwards as Sarah Spoilit, for an all-star cast with more chemistry than a science lab!

Of course the story of Snow White is well known, but somehow this production creates more layers and depths to it, with a very charming balance of light and dark, interjected with the best slapstick comedy the south has to offer, as well as the most wonderful special effects, costumes and scenery!

But aside from the story, and comedy (this year's 12 days of Christmas is by far the best yet) this year's panto really took the production levels up to a higher standard than anyone was expecting with some of the most creative and talented dancing I have seen.

With two sets of dancers, adult and children, the crowd at the Kings are treated to a completely enchanting variety of dance including a beautifully moving ballet piece, a dramatic and daring street dance presentation, a zombie routine that would have made Michael Jackson reconsider casting for Thriller and the most stunning tap dance presented by the younger dancers.

Also this year there seemed to be more songs, all modern tunes the kids could sing along to, creatively intertwined with the story, adding to the electric atmosphere projecting from the stage.

As for the actors, Anita Harris, who has fallen in love with the King's after her last panto experience, was exceptional as the evil Queen, and we were more than happy that her amazing singing talents were put to great use.

The dwarfs were delightful, by far the funniest and most charismatic dwarfs the King's has hosted - And my word can one of them twerk!

Marcus Patrick was, as always, an asset to the cast, leading pretty much every sniff of humour in every single scene he was in (though be warned you will boo him at one point - and hate yourself for it!), whilst Melinda literally sparkled as Fairy Sparkles.

But I really do have to take a moment here to absolutely bow down to Jack Edwards who, along with his side kick Muddles played by Simon Grant, stole the show!

Home grown Jack has played the dame at the Kings Theatre panto pretty much forever, and never disappoints, but in this role as Sarah Spoilit he lit up the entire theatre with his quick wit, sensational wardrobe changes and bucket loads of character!  He will have you shaking the seats with belly laughter!

All in all nobody should take much persuading to go to the pantomime, its by far and away the best way to kick start Christmas in your family, and this production will do that sensationally.  Young and old, grumpy and bashful; you will all get a huge kick out of Snow White at the King's Theatre this festive season so click here to book your tickets now!

Snow White and the magnificent seven real dwarfs is playing from now all the way till January 1 2018.
