Could You Foster?

Author: Foster Portsmouth Published: 12th January 2018 11:25

The new year is an ideal time to find out how you could change a child's life.

Come along to the Holiday Inn Express in Farlington (Eastern Road, PO6 1UN) on Saturday the 27th of January, from 10am to 1pm, meet Portsmouth City Council's fostering team and some of our foster carers, to find out how you could become a foster carer.

There are many different ways to foster, for example full-time as a career, part-time, on a respite basis, or simply by providing a spare room and support for a young person through our Lodgings Plus scheme.

Foster carers come from all walks of life, and receive around £165-£550 a week per young person in their care (some of which is towards food, clothes, toys etc for the child).

Lodgings Plus providers can receive over £750 a month for providing a 16-24 year old with accommodation, daily meals and around 10 hours a week support with things like helping them learn to cook, apply for jobs, college, university and generally helping them learn to live independently, and is an ideal option for those wanting to combine fostering with work.

You can foster regardless of ethnicity, sexuality or gender, whether you're single or part of couple, or whether you rent or own your own home. The rewards of changing a child's life, being their role model and helping them have a positive future are fantastic.

A spare room is essential, and we're particularly keen to speak to anyone with childcare experience, experience of working with young people, or people with disabilities.

The Portsmouth Adoption Service will also be at the event to chat to anyone interested in adopting a child, and the council needs adopters for children of all ages, especially aged 3+ and sibling groups.
