Panto Walk-a-thon Will Raise Funds for Theatre

Ever fancied yourself as the next big pantomime star?
Whether it’s Cinderella and her Ugly Sisters, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dick Wittington, or the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk, you could find yourself among the characters.
On 26 October 2019 some of the actors and dancers in this year’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, at the Groundlings Theatre, will be donning their panto gear as part of a Walk-a-Thon to raise much needed money for the theatre.
Staff at Groundlings are calling for families, groups of friends and other members of the community to join the seven mile walk from the Groundlings Theatre in Portsmouth to The Plough and Barleycorn in Cowplain. It’s a chance to get fit and raise money at the same time.
The idea was thought up by staff at The Plough and Barleycorn who wanted to help the Groundlings Theatre raise crucial funds after it was burgled and severely vandalised last month.
AboutMyArea was told, "During the sponsored walk you’ll get the chance to speak to those involved in the panto and find out what you can do to follow in their footsteps. If you come dressed as a panto star, you’ll be helping us create our very own sea of panto stars through the streets of Hampshire."
Fancy dress, as a character from any pantomime is encouraged, but not essential.
Becky Mcbride, Assistant Manager of the Plough and Barleycorn, who is organising the event said: “Groundlings is so important to so many people in the community and we just wanted to do our bit towards helping them get back on their feet. It’s going to be a great day, so join up with your pals, come in fancy dress if you want to, and we’ll be there to greet you with tea, coffee and other refreshments at the finish line”.
Richard stride, Artistic Director at the Groundlings Theatre, added: “We are so grateful for how the local community has pulled together to offer their support for Groundlings. We are determined that the spirit of the theatre won’t be dampened by the events and what better way to show that than with a walk, in fancy dress, through the streets of Hampshire with some of the actors and dancers from Jack and the Beanstalk in tow? We are really grateful to the Plough and Barleycorn for their idea and their support”.
The walk gets underway at 11.30am from the Groundlings Theatre.
