Students Take on Lecturers at Fratton Park Charity Football Match

Published: 22nd May 2018 11:02

University of Portsmouth students will take on their lecturers at Fratton Park this Friday (25 May) for a charity football match.

Tickets are available for the third annual Students v Staff Match, which will raise funds for Brain Tumour Research and Pompey in the Community.

The staff team are hoping to continue their winning ways at the home of Portsmouth Football Club after their 3-1 victory over the student team last year. More importantly, both teams have already helped raise more than £10,000 beating last year’s figure of £7,554.

Jackson Davies, from University of Portsmouth Global, said: "I'm really pleased to be a part of the staff team this year, as it raises funds for two fantastic causes. Sadly, I lost my dad to cancer in March 2017, so it was very important to me to be able to do something to help fund cancer research in key areas, especially while doing something to test my footballing skills!

“I remember going to watch the match last year, and being impressed with the atmosphere of the day, so I was really keen to be part of it this year. The training has been intense, with regular fitness sessions and friendlies against good opponents - we're not taking anything for granted, and we really want to give a good performance against a strong student team!"

Pompey in the Community are an independent charitable trust affiliated to Portsmouth Football Club, which delivers educational programmes to over 8,000 people a year.

The University hosts one of four UK Centres of Excellence funded by Brain Tumour Research. The disease kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet has received just 1% of the national spend on cancer research over the last decade.

Tim Green, Community Fundraising Manager at Brain Tumour Research: “We are extremely grateful to the University of Portsmouth for its donation and want to thank everyone who has helped to fundraise for this important cause. The money that staff and students have raised will go towards our network of dedicated Centres of Excellence, including the one here at University of Portsmouth where scientists are focused on improving outcomes for patients and, ultimately, finding a cure.”

Tickets are £5 per person, but free for children aged 16 and under. Stadium tours and raffle prize are also available on the day with kick-off at 7pm www.sportportsmouth.co.uk/charity-football-match/
