Help young people in the community by volunteering in 2020

Published: 16th December 2019 16:30

PEOPLE from Southampton looking to help out in their community in 2020 can volunteer at a charity that helps run youth clubs for some of the city’s most disadvantaged youngsters.

Weston Church Youth Project (WCYP*) is looking for volunteers to spare a few hours per week to help with its work offering fun drop-in, open access clubs, trips and holiday activities to young people.

WCYP’s Youth Engagement Coordinator, Jenni Boulter, who is based at the charity’s offices at The Venny at Weston Adventure Playground (WAP), said: “With the New Year approaching, people are starting to think about their New Year’s Resolutions and how they can do their bit.

“One of the ways people can help is by volunteering in their community and we’re asking people to get in touch with us if they can spare a few hours per week to help us offer fun drop-in, open access clubs, trips and holiday activities, designed to help build children’s social skills and self-esteem.

“We always value any skills that people can offer us, so anyone who wants to support a good cause, helping some of the most wonderful young people, would be very welcome!

“We would particularly value those with youth work skills who could help staff our youth clubs, as well as people with administrative or fundraising or finance experience too. We will provide training and complete all the necessary DBS and reference checks as well.”

WCYP is an inclusive charity that enables, encourages and equips the young people of Weston to live life to the full and to contribute to their wider community.

The neighbourhood-rooted, non-profit organisation works with some of the most disadvantaged youngsters in the area and the team is passionate about empowering young people and giving them opportunities that will impact on their lives now and in the future.

Jenni added: “It’s well known that doing good for other people makes you feel good too. It’s very rewarding knowing you have helped someone in some way. Volunteering is also great for your CV and gives you opportunities to meet new people. You can also gain new skills and increase your confidence by volunteering.

“If you’d like to get to know us, please feel free to pop in to any of our open-access clubs or please give us a ring on 07403 635355, visit www.wcyp.org, or come and see us at our office.”

WCYP’s Rock Solid clubs are held on Thursday and Friday evenings for ages from seven years to 18 and gives young people the chance to meet outside of school in a safe and fun environment, or to hang out and spend time together and take part in a variety of activities.

Cia Collins from Weston in Southampton, who volunteers for WCYP, said: “WCYP makes such a big difference to the young people living in the Weston community. To be a small part of that is such a privilege as we get to see young people grow and learn and find out more about who they are.”

Anyone wishing to volunteer or find out more about WCYP and its work, should call 07403 635355 or visit www.wcyp.org.
