Southampton Mayor to make a ‘splash for cash’ to help city’s lonely & isolated

SOUTHAMPTON’S Mayor is donning his swimming trunks this month (January 2020) and braving the high board with the assistance of former Olympic diver Peter Waterfield to help raise funds for charity.
Councillor Peter Baillie is participating in the sponsored dive on January 25 for one of his mayoral charities, Communicare, which enriches the lives of the city’s lonely and isolated.
Cllr Baillie said: “This is an exciting, ingenious and fun way to raise some money for a charity that is close to my heart. I am really looking forward to taking part and to meeting Pete, who is an outstanding athlete who has done much to put Southampton on the sporting map with his successful diving career and his Olympic silver medal win.
“I’ve never done anything like this before, I am a complete diving novice and it’s going to be both a daunting and an exhilarating experience! I hope lots of other people join in and take part in some way too.
“You can get involved by either sponsoring me, coming along to watch, cheering me on as a Communicheerer, by diving yourself or volunteering to help run the event.”
Communicare is a friendly, neighbourhood charity that wants to eradicate loneliness and isolation in the city with the assistance of its band of Communiteers, who volunteer to give their time freely.
Communicare Manager, Annie Clewlow explained: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the fearless and fit to make a splash in 2020 and to raise cash for us by entering our sponsored dive at The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex on Saturday, January 25 from 5.30pm until 7pm.
“We’re really excited that Olympic silver medallist, Peter Waterfield, has agreed to support us on the day and to guide and encourage our intrepid team, and that the Mayor will also be making his debut on the boards!
“As well as the event on the Saturday evening, we’re also hosting a compulsory training session on Friday, January 24, 8pm – 9pm, for anyone who is taking part. We’d love it if as many people as possible could join us as a diver/jumper, a sponsor, an event volunteer or a cheer leader.”

The event will take place at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, Harbour Parade, Southampton, SO15 1BA. All entrants will need to attend both the training session on Friday, January 24 and the event on Saturday, January 25.
Annie added: “We ask for all those wishing to dive pay a £10 registration fee and that you pledge to raise a minimum of £30 in sponsorship for us.”
To take part entrants must be aged eight years or above, be able to swim 25 metres or more unaided, on their front, be confident in deep water, as the dive pool is 5m deep, happy to swim without goggles and be in good health. The ‘training’ session on the Friday will help those participating to become familiar with the pool and understand how the event will run. Entrants will also discuss with coaches what dives/jumps they will perform during the event and which boards they will use.
Unless entrants are already current, competent divers known to the Active Nation Diving Programme it is compulsory that they attend this session.
On the Saturday all entrants will start with a poolside entry, then move up through the boards to the level agreed between them and the coaches. Board heights include poolside, 1m, 3m, 5m, 7.5m and 10m. The type of skill, i.e. feet first/headfirst/twists and turns, to be used must be pre-discussed with the coach prior to performing it.
Communicare’s Good Neighbours’ Network supports nearly 400 individuals/families annually, covering more than 2,300 tasks including one-to-one befriending, transport to activities, such as the regular lunch clubs and tea parties it hosts and shopping for, or with, those it helps. All the assistance offered is free to users, although beneficiaries are invited to make a donation if they are able, and Communiteers are offered expenses.
