Unicorn Ceilidhs’ March offering is a “Contra-Ceilidh” featuring legendary band King Kontra with caller Geoff Cubitt, at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Baldock on Friday March 13th.
King Kontra’s instrumental lineup of fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar and double bass creates a really special string band sound. Expect a perfect fusion of drive, energy and originality with steadier authentic Western Swing, Old Time and Irish. A terrific blend of original and traditional material played by masters of their instruments.
Geoff Cubitt is well known as a caller for Contra, American Squares and English Ceilidh. He has called at many UK festivals as well as internationally in Europe and the USA. Geoff has a style of calling that is helpful to beginners as well as catering for more experienced dancers, so a great evening’s dancing is guaranteed!
Contra or American style Ceilidh is fast, flowing dancing to fiddle-based music with many of the figures similar to those done at English Ceilidhs (or Barn Dances). You don’t need to bring a partner as you will dance with most of the other people in the hall during the evening and cannot help but come away happy at the end of the night.
Cambridgeshire-based Sutton Masque Morris make their second appearance at Unicorn Ceilidhs as this month’s interval entertainment. Expect energetic Border-style Morris with sticks, bells and fine music.
Held at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Baldock, the evening starts at 8:00 p.m. (doors open at 7:30), and finishes at 11.00 p.m. Adults - £11, Seniors over 65 - £10, Children under 18 - £6, Students / unwaged - £8. First 6 students before 8 p.m. - FREE! Excellent value for a live band and caller! Parking is easy in the town centre; just walk to the church and you’ll find the hall in the church grounds.
All the dances are walked through beforehand, and the emphasis is very much on enjoying yourself, rather than getting everything step perfect. See www.unicornceilidhs.org.uk for full details and advance booking.
