Hosepipe Band gets ceilidh season off to a great start

The first Unicorn Ceilidh of the new season will be on Friday 9th September at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Baldock SG7 5AE, featuring The Hosepipe Band and Barry Goodman.
The Hosepipe Band played for their first dance in May 1993. Since then they have played well over five hundred times for public dances and for private celebrations – around the UK but also one or two in France and Italy.
Their dance repertoire combines traditional music from the British Isles and other European countries with their own compositions and they have made five recordings of their music.
They have a racous approach to music; so expect bagpipes, hurdy gurdy, melodeon and bells to feature in their quite splendid music. The line-up features: Simon Haines on melodeons, concertina, hurdy gurdy; Geoff Combes on mandola; Val Wollard on flute, recorder, bagpipes, saxophone, bells, hammered dulcimer and Matt Haines on bass guitar.
This is the band’s second visit to Unicorn Ceilidhs in two years - they were so popular last time they played for us that we had to ask them again!
The caller will be Barry Goodman, who will also be calling with the band at the Folk East festival in August. Barry comes to Unicorn Ceilidhs following a summer of calling at festivals all around the country, and will bring his usual mixture of ceilidh favourites and less well-known dances, blurring the edges between the various styles of folk dance, but keeping a keen ceilidh spirit at all times.
The evening starts at 8:00 p.m. (doors open at 7:30), and finishes about 11.00 p.m. Adults - £10, Seniors over 65 - £9, Children under 18 - £6, Students / unwaged - £7. First 6 students before 8 p.m. - FREE! Excellent value for a live band and caller!
All the dances are walked through beforehand, and the emphasis is very much on enjoying yourself, rather than getting everything step perfect. See www.unicornceilidhs.org.uk for full details.
