Great music for the feet!

Three Penny Bit

This month’s Unicorn Ceilidh at Baldock Town Hall on Friday 29th May features one of the best young bands in the country.

Threepenny Bit takes 8 of the finest folk, jazz and classical musicians in Hampshire and lets them loose on the world of folk dance music. With lively arrangements of traditional and original tunes played with infectious stage energy, they’re sure to have you dancing! The band met at Southampton University in 2011 and started busking to take folk music to the streets for a summer holiday. Four years, three albums and a host of successful concert, ceilidh, folk club and festival performances later the band are still going strong! 2014 saw the release of their third album 'Pantomime Cannon' to critical acclaim.

Taking the dancers through the moves will be caller Phill Moxley, also from Hampshire, who has been making a name for himself on the ceilidh scene over the past few years.  He has a great repertoire of dances, some of which are self-penned, and he’ll make sure everyone has a terrific time.

The interval entertainment this month is from Cambridge-based Gog Magog Molly – the multi-coloured menace of the fens.  Molly Dancing is an ancient tradition from the depths of East Anglia; the original dances were the source of Gog Magog’s repertoire, which went on to include their own brilliantly-conceived dances.

Unicorn Ceilidhs are held on the last Friday of each month at Baldock Arts and Heritage Centre (Baldock Town Hall) on the corner of High Street and Hitchin Street.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the dancing starts at 8:00.  There’s a real ale, cider, wine and soft drinks bar open all evening and plenty of on-street parking near the venue.

You don't need to book tickets - just pay at the door.  Admission for adults is £10, seniors over 65 £9, children under 18 £6, students / unwaged £7. First 6 students before 8 p.m. FREE!  Excellent value for a whole evening’s dancing to a live band and caller!
