A Musical Treat for the Feet!

Unicorn Ceilidhs will be serving up a proper treat of music and dance on Friday 13th April at St Mary’s Church Hall, Baldock when Vertical Expression will be playing for the annual “Contra Ceilidh” with Andrew Swaine calling the moves.
Contra dancing is an American form of folk dance, based on English Country Dancing but with a trans-Atlantic twist.  The music is high-energy and the dancing has been described as high-voltage barn dance, so it’s a great way to spend an evening!

Probably the UK's most high-energy contra dance band, Vertical Expression is what happens when you take two English ceilidh musicians on fiddle and melodeon and put them with a guitar and double bass rhythm section with a love of bluegrass and gypsy jazz, throw in some old time music and foot percussion, a bit of French-Canadian one-row box, a few Irish fiddle tunes, some Django Reinhardt-style guitar, a bit of creativity and a lot of energy and fun...

Andrew Swaine is well-known for his eclectic knowledge of all kinds of folk dance – he’s especially good at getting people to try out new styles of dance, very quickly making them feel at ease and enjoying the dancing.

Interval entertainment will be from Hertfordshire Holly, a Morris side based in Hertford, who specialise in the clog Morris style of the North-West of England.

Unicorn Ceilidhs are held at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Baldock SG7 5AE from 8:00 – 11:00, there’s a Real Ale, Cider, wine and soft drinks bar and you can park in the High Street or Twitchell Car Park (behind the Community Centre) and walk to the hall in the church grounds.  Admission is just £10 for adults with concessions for children, students, seniors and families.  See www.unicornceilidhs.org.uk for full details.
